[S]peaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head,
into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with
which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body's growth in
building itself up in love. Ephesians 4:15-16
As the month of March progresses, we move from introspective Lenten Sundays, in which we consider
how our lives of faith may be deepened and strengthened, through Holy Week, when we focus as intensely as we are able on the sufferings of Jesus for our sake, and then, with joy and hope, to Easter
Sunday. Please note in this issue of the Herald the times of special programs and services during Holy
Week and Easter.
As my schedule moves inexorably closer to April 3, I realize once more the importance of our being
an Easter people. With the message of Easter fresh in our minds, how can we doubt that God has
the very best of plans for us, plans for [our] welfare and not for harm, to give [us] a future with
hope (Jeremiah 29:11)? Still, we sometimes become anxious. Although I have had very cordial meetings with the pastor nominating committee in Birmingham, and I have read vision and mission statements for the congregation, there is really no way to know what kind of challenges I will face in my new
ministry there. Surely there will be times when I long for the familiarity of persons, issues, and context
that has become so comfortable here at Central. By the same token, as a congregation you may have
moments when you want the familiarity of my pastoral and administrative touch, no matter how clumsy
it may sometimes have been. But change is inevitable. We do not know what lies ahead, yet we know
that God already has prepared the way and has plans for us that are better than what we could have
imagined.
For me and for you, I hope we can keep strongly in mind that the Holy Spirit really does equip every
ligament of Christs bodythe members of the churchto work together properly, as we grow and
build ourselves up in love. In other words, everything that is necessary for the ministry to which God
calls us (in Terre Haute and in Birmingham)skills, resources, volunteers, spiritual giftsis available in
our congregations. The key is for each ligament to be connected and working. Just like in a body!
I hope you will take my departure from Central as your cue to begin functioning as church leaders and
congregation with even more energy and intentionality than before. There is no they in church, only
us. If a job needs to be done, consider that you may be the one to do it! During your last interim
period, before I arrived, you learned that you really were not dependent on pastoral leadership, but
could make decisions, chart courses of action, and execute plans as a congregation. While I have been
here, I hope I have done nothing to diminish your confidence in yourselves and in the guidance of the
Spirit among you. You can do what God calls you to do. Im confident you will.
And, from deep within a heart that is full of love for you, I say, Thank you.
