Activity: Individual Learning Plan

Materials: 23 Computers (with internet access), Access to NAVIANCE ILP
(or) attached Individual Learning Plan guided questions, Bell Ringer, Pens,
Paper, Bag of Candy
Procedure:
1) (10 minutes) Bell ringer and transition to beginning of session: Students
complete a thoughtful question portrayed on the board on a piece of paper
after sitting in seats at the beginning of class. Question: How often do I
miss class? Do I think school is important? What is the importance of school
attendance? Introduce yourself and review the objectives of the session.
Transition to Individual Learning Plan Activity.
2) (30 minutes) Individual Learning Plan
a) Begin by asking the students login to NAVIANCE and access the
Individual Learning Plan; or provide guided ILP questions.
b) Once students have accessed the Individual Learning Plan, explain
the process/guided questions: Create goals for the year, Identify
potential barriers, Identify strategies to overcome barriers and reach
goals, Complete high school checklist, Identify interests and
strengths, Organize course selections, Search 3 colleges and majors,

Search 3 potential careers. Remind students to take the assignment


seriously, think critically, and create realistic goals as to actively
follow through is expected.
3) (10 minutes) Reflection/Discussion (Distribute candy to those who wish to
share thoughts to the class). Have students answer (and share) three
questions regarding attendance: 1) Have my thoughts changed about school
attendance after this activity? 2) Can actively participating in academics
influence my future plans? How? 3) Can I honestly hold myself accountable
for my Individual Learning Plan? Why or why not?
Plan for Evaluation: How will each of the following be collected?
Process Data: All 10th grade students will participate in a 50-minute lesson
reinforcing the importance of school attendance through creating an
Individual Learning Plan (358 students).
Perception Data: Students will indicate their individual beliefs about the
importance of school and attendance through the bell ringer activity. After
the activity, students will participate in a reflection and discussion
measuring how their opinions have changed as well as insights to what they
can change right now to begin implementing short- and long-term goals.
Both bell ringer and reflection papers will be collected to determine the
perception data.
Outcome Data: Students will be able to independently complete an
individual learning plan, use problem solving and critical thinking to set
goals, create strategies, overcome barriers, explore self-interests and career
options. With this self-assessment of creating an ILP, students will have
thoroughly completed a series of steps, which if implemented, will ensure a
successful academic timeline to reaching postsecondary education. The goal
is that students will feel a sense of empowerment and ownership of this ILP
and will understand the importance of academic attendance is necessary to

acquire academic success. Outcome data will be collected by determining


the change in percentage of sophomore attendance rates in school.
Follow Up: Additionally, this activity can be taken further into individual
meetings with the school counselor to further explore the ideas and options
from the plan for each student. The school counselor will also be able to
check in and reinforce the importance of attendance, reaching set goals,
and hold students accountable for implementing strategies for success.
