Dear Employer,
I am graduating with a Masters in Teaching from the University of Virginia in May of 2016. I will
hold certification for teaching in the secondary English & Language Arts classroom. I am writing to
obtain employment in such a manner for the 2016-17 academic year.
Literature is my longest standing passion. My love of books, of reading and writing, of language itself
and the rich discourse of human experience it expresses and reveals drew me towards the career of
teaching, and that same love of literature has remained the driving passion in my inchoate, but
rewarding teaching career thus far. My teaching internship, which I completed at Monticello High
School in Charlottesville, VA, provided me with ample opportunities to bring that energy, that
enthusiasm to students, and more importantly, to co-create with my students that spark of critical
thinking needed to appreciate and engage in English language studies. I was fortunate enough to get
immediate experience planning for and instructing four sections of AP Language and Composition as
well as one section of Honors 11 Literaturea highly intellectually stimulating course-load. Through
this placement I learned how to guide meaningful discussions through asking good questionshoning
my skills at teasing and shaping student contributions into high-level learning opportunities. My
classroom became a place filled with writingcreative writing, expressive and reflective writing, and
of course analytical writingas I firmly believe that contributing to the world of language is as
valuable as being able to appreciate it. I should also note that my successful student teaching venture
led to employment at my placement high school. I am currently teaching English to my own class of
Standard level 9th Graderssuch a different, yet equally challenging and rewarding experience than
my tenure as a student teacher.
I dont come to this career new; please keep this in mind as you consider me for a teaching position in
your school. Granted, my teaching career is a budding one, a young onethough it is worth noting
that on the eve of Masters degree completion I have held multiple professional teaching positions
alreadybut I come to this profession as an adult. At 34 years old Ive led a rich life alreadyIve
been a musician, a writer, an actor, a teller of tales in many mediums. I am a husband, a friend, a
neighbor, a son, a mentor, a band mate. In many ways Ive always been a teachermy passion for life
dictates that I share indiscriminatelyI will always be a teacher; Im too excited about art and
literature and music and life not to be. I look forward to getting the opportunity to bring that passion to
your school.
Thank you,
Adam Brock
