Gas Laws

Picture Vocabulary

Chemistry

Pressure

Force per unit area.

Boyles Law

The pressure of a gas varies inversely with

volume at constant temperature expressed as the
equation P1V1 = P2V2.

Charles Law

The temperature of a gas varies directly with

volume at constant pressure expressed as
the equation V1/T1 = V2/T2.

Guy Lussacs Law

Also known as the pressure law, the pressure of a gas

varies directly with the temperature at constant volume;
expressed as the equation P1/T1 = P2/T2.

Combined Gas Law

Can be used to determine the pressure,

volume, or temperature of gases and can be
expressed as P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2.

Avogadros Principle

Equal volumes of gas contain the

same number of atoms or molecules.

Avogadros Law

The number of moles of a gas varies directly with

the volume of a gas at constant temperature and
pressure.

Ideal Gas Law

Boyles Law

Charles Law

Avogadros Law

An equation describing the behavior of a gas in

terms of temperature, pressure, volume, and
number of moles; expressed as PV = nRT.

Ideal Gas

A gas that perfectly follows the Ideal Gas Model.

Standard Temperature and

Pressure (STP)

These units are shown as 0 C, or

273 Kelvin (K) for temperature and
1 atmosphere (1 atm), or 760 torr for pressure.

Daltons Law of Partial Pressure

The total pressure of a mixture of gases

is the sum of the partial pressures
of the gases contained within that mixture.

Temperature

The hotness or coldness of matter as related to

the average kinetic energy of the molecules of
that substance.

Celsius

A unit to measure temperature,

where 0 is freezing and 100 is boiling.

Kelvin

Represented as the letter K;

it is the SI unit of temperature.

Atmospheres

The SI unit of pressure measurement

represented as 1 atm.

Mm Hg

A unit of pressure measurement

that equals 760 torr.

Barometer

A device used to measure atmospheric pressure.

Molar Volume

The molar volume for all gases at STP is 22.4

liters per mole of gas, or 22.4 L/mol. Each gas, at
STP, will have the same molar volume.

The portion of chemistry dealing with numerical

relationships in chemical reactions involving
gases.

Gas Stoichiometric Calculation

The calculation of quantities of substances

involved in chemical equations involving gases.
