Description (2) General Kelvin Hughes P.12 Compass is of the grid steering type, designed for roof mounting in cockpits where a suitable position, free from magnetic interference, cannot be found for a compass of the conventional type. The instrument is a standard R.A.F. type and its construction complies with the Air Registration Board requirements for magnetic compasses > P.12 Compass Type KCA-1501 Figure 1 February 1960 Printed in England Page 1 1 SMITHS sro 36/52, verses P.12 COMPASS DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION (2) Mechanical (a) Compass bowl is of brass, circular in form and sealed at the bottom by a verge glass. (&) The bowl is completely filled with strong aero alcohol as a damping medium. (c) Bellows allow for expansion and contraction of the damping medium with variations in temperature. (@) Suspension system consisting of four spiral springs, supports the bowl ina brass container. (e) This arrangement, together with a suitable damping system, permits limited fore and aft and athwartships movement of the bowl, whilst isolating the magnet system from vibration. (0) Rotation of the bowl within the container is prevented by a floating ring fitted between the two components. (g) A stem, rigidly mounted in the centre of the verge glass, has a sapphire jewelled cup at its upper end, in which rests the pivot of the magnet system. (h) The pivot mounting is designed so as to maintain freedom of the magnet system at all angles up to + 20° from the horizontal. () Luminous or fluorescent tubes are attached to the filaments of the magnet system. (j) A fixed lubber line is fitted in the bowl over the verge glass. (&) A scale is engraved in 2° increments on the inner rim of a grid ring, which rotates on the bowl. (1) The skirt of the grid ring is also graduated and can be read against an external index mark positioned 180° from the lubber line. (rm) The gradiations on the skirt are similarly offset so that the two scales agree exactly. (a) Two sets of parallel grid wires are fitted across the grid ring to form an open one, (0) A small thumb clamp is provided to lock the grid ring in any desired position. (p) An adjustable mirror is mounted below the compass on a hinged arm. Page 2 February 1960 SMITHS se sen 38/52 Grannar wacnt ~~ P.12 COMPASS 1, DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION — (q) The position of the mirror can be easily set to give a clear view of the compass presentation. (r) A lever is provided to lock the mirror in any desired position. (s) Mounting lugs, spaced 120° apart, are fitted to the outside of the container. (t) These lugs are slotted to enable "A" co-efficient correction, of up to 5° either side of the fore and aft axis, to be applied during installation. (u) The "AFT" lug is marked in a scale of 1° increments so that the amount of "A" co-efficient correction made can be seen. (v) Correction is made for co-efficients "B" and "GC" by means of a No.3 Corrector mounted above the compass. (w) Correction is made for coefficients "B", "C" and "R" by means of a No.4 Corrector mounted above the compass. NOTE. The above correctors are alternatives and only one or the other should be used. 7 (3) Electrical (a) Socket for a 12 or 24 volt d.c. electric lamp for index mark and scale illumination. B. Removing the Bowl from the Container (1) Place the clamping arm in the lock position. (2) Depress the four bowl support springs s0 as to release the bowl support spigots. (3) Gently lift the bow! out of the container. NOTE. As the bowl is being removed it may be found necessary to depress the bowl damper springs to prevent them fouling the container mo 1. Removing the Bowl Support Springs, Brackets and Spigots (1) Unscrew the 8 BA screw which secures each bow! support spring to its bracket. (2) Remove the springs (3) Unscrew the two 8 BA screws which hold each bowl support bracket to the inside of the container (4) Remove the brackets. (5) Remove the bowl support spigots by unscrewing them in an anti-clockwise direction. J. Dismantling the Mirror Assembl (1) Unserew the four 6 BA screws located around the rim of the ball socket. (2) Remove the ball and locking lever from the mirror back (3) Turn the locking lever in a clockwise direction and remove the ball from the ball mo socket. {OTE. Loose or uneven movement of the mirror bracket arm is usually due to deterioration of the Langite lining in the ball socket. In such cases thoroughly clean the socket and remove the lining. The application of a little acetone c~ will soften the adhesive which holds the lining and enable it to be removed. Removing the Grid Ring Clamping Arm (1) Unscrew the 8BA threaded spindle from the attachment pin. (2) Remove the clamping arm and clamping arm spring. M. Extracting the Fluid (Q) Place the compass on its side with the filling plug uppermost. (2) Carefully unscrew and remove the filling plug and washer (3) Invert the bowl and expel the fluid by gentle manipulation of the bellows CAUTION: TO AVOID DAMAGE, DO NOT DEPRESS THE BELLOWS TOO FAR N. Removing the Verge Glass and Magnet Frame (1) Unscrew the eight 6BA screws which secure the verge ring to the bowl (2) Remove the verge ring, verge ring gasket and verge glass from the bowl. CAUTION, WHILST REMOVING THE VERGE GLASS, CARE MUST BE TAKEN TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE MAGNET FRAME SINCE IT IS MOUNTED ON THE VERGE GLASS. (3) Hold the verge glass securely, with the magnet frame uppermost (4) Release the nut under the split sleeve with the stem nut spanner illustrated in Fig. 5 opposite. (5) Remove the magnet frame. NOT! So as to prevent the magnet frame from attracting ferrous matter, it is important that it is de~magnetised immediately on removal and afterwards placed in a protective container until required. Removing the Luminous or Fluorescent Tubes NOTE. If the luminous or fluorescent tubes are renewed, or the magnet frame repaired in any way, the assembly will require rebalancing - an operation calling for great skill and care. For this reason, and because of the very delicate con~ struction of this part of the compass, it is recommended that, in the event of any part of the magnet frame requiring repair, the complete assembly be replaced by a new unit obtainable from the manufacturers. However, where suitable facilities exist, the following instructions are given for renewal of the tubes (1) Hold the magnet frame firmly (2) Carefully remove the two metal clips which secure each of the luminous oz fluorescent tubes to the filament wires February 1960 Printed in England Page 11 SMITHS
