HIGH PROTEIN, HIGH CALORIE DIET

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this diet is to provide high protein, high


calorie foods to support the repair body tissues and to
combat infection.

USE:

For individuals who are convalescing from a prolonged


illness and fo r individuals with general malnutrition.

MODIFICATIONS: The General Diet is modified to provide calories, protein,


minerals and vitamins in amounts greater than
recommended for the average person. Foods are the same
as General Diet (page B-1), with the additions listed in
Table B-4.

A high-protein milkshake is a good supplement for patients needing a high-protein, highcalorie drink. Protein content of a milkshake can be increased by 10 grams with the
addition of 4 T dry skim milk power (additional 103 kilocalories) or whole milk powder
(additional 140 kilocalories). Commercial supplements are also available. (See page F3).

ADEQUACY:

When a wide variety of foods is consumes, this diet


will meet the 1989 Recommended Dietary Allowances (see
Appendix 5).
