Guidelines: Students may submit a one- to two-page (typed or handwritten) essay
addressing the importance of wildlife in North Carolina. Students are encouraged to be creative with this venture: for example, they may choose to write a story that communicates why it is important to take care of wildlife or may write an essay on a particular species. Students may receive help to research their entries, but the text should be their own. Any student enrolled in a Wake County elementary school may submit an entry, limit of one entry per student. Each submission should include the students name, grade, teachers name, and school name, as well as have a copy of the completed release forms signed by a parent or guardian. How to Submit: Submissions may be mailed to Cynthia Rosenfeld, 103 Timberlyne Ct., Chapel Hill, NC 27514 or emailed to cynthia.porter86@gmail.com. Deadlines: All submissions must be postmarked (mail) or timestamped (online) on or before April 22, 2016. Prizes: Grand Prize: Your photograph and essay featured on HSUS-NC Facebook page and potentially picked up by other HSUS publications, a bat house for your school, copy of Wild Neighbors for your school library, seed packet for your school, and a My Humane Backyard sign for your school, as well as a copy of Kind News for the student. If desired, the school may also choose to have a My Humane Backyard presentation by HSUS-NC State Director Erica Geppi and/or Volunteer District 4 Leader Cindy Rosenfeld. Second Place: Copy of Wild Neighbors for your school library, seed packet for your school, and a My Humane Backyard sign for your school, as well as a copy of Kind News for the student. Third Place: Craft birdhouse for your school, seed packet for your school, and a My Humane Backyard sign for your school, as well as a copy of Kind News for the student. All students who enter: Copy of Kind News for the student. Note: Schools will be eligible to receive the My Humane Backyard sign upon signing the Humane Backyard pledge. By signing the pledge, the schools will have access to HSUS resources to help support them in creating a safe zone for wildlife. Schools may choose not to sign the pledge, and the student and school will still receive all other listed prizes. Notification of Winners: Schools will notified of the winning entries via phone call and email on Monday, May 16. All prizes will be mailed or delivered to the schools of the winning entries.
