Three Part Lesson

Identify what the students are expected to think about or do. Write the lesson description with
enough detail that another teacher could replicate the lesson without a personal discussion.
What Teachers Do:
What Students do:
Minds on: Motivational Hook/engagement /Introduction (5-15 min)
Establish a positive learning environment, connect to prior learning, set the context for learning, pre-determine key questions to guide
lesson.
Time: 12:00_-_12:05(Indicate time breakdown of instructional
elements)
Students are sitting on the carpet but they are not ready to listen, they
are being rowdy.
Boys and girls settle down
All eyes on me in 1..23
Students are showing that they are ready to listen
Alright boys and girls who can tell me what we did yesterday
(Kids raise their hands)
during language arts?
Yes Susan
We looked at posters, that you buy stuff
Does anyone remember what those are called? Yes,
Bobby
Advertisments
Very good Bobby
We also looked at different media texts and how they are
used to advertise products. Who can name me some of the
different media texts used to advertise?
Good job! Im impressed you all have such good memories!
When we looked at the advertisements we talked about overt
and invert messages and we wrote about it (point to the
chart)
Who remembers what an overt message is?
Mindy
What about invert messages?

Magazines Newspaper Big Board Poster Commercial

Movies

When a message is clear

(6 students raise their hands)
Invert is when the message is hidden

Simon
Excellent
Lets practice at finding the target audience intended. Look at
this advertisement (ad of a child playing with a scooter) who
is the advertisement being targeted for?

(students look at the advertisement )

Yes, Mary

For kids

And why do you think that?

Because there is a kid on the scooter there is no one else on it

Good job noticing that Mary

Action: During /Working on it (time given for each component, suggested 15-40 min)
Introduce new learning or extend/reinforce prior learning, provide opportunities for practice & application of learning.
Time: 12:05-12:25 (Indicate time breakdown of instructional
elements)
Today we are going to create our own advertisement poster
just like the ones we have looked at to promote a product of
our that is targeted towards kids your age . There are poster
paper, markers, examples of advertisement posters and
some products you can use to talk about in your poster if you
want to. Remember you can look at the charts we made
about advertisements and what is needed on a poster to help
you. Just remember to use more than three colours in your
poster. Grade 2s will need to write 4 sentences on their
poster and the grade 3s need to write at least 6 sentences
.
Thats okay you can refer/look at the chart we made
yesterday of what goes on a poster.
I have also left out some examples for you to look at if you
need help.
Before we go back to our desks, what are we doing today?

Lakehead University Orillia, 09 02 15

Ms.D!! I dont remember what goes on a poster Me neither

(together)

Making a poster to sell a product

And who is are target audience? Who is the product for?

Kids our age!

How many sentences does my grade 2s have to write?

Grade 2s 4 sentences

and grade 3s?

'
Quietly can students who are wearing the colour blue or
green go to their desks?
If you are wearing white or black quietly go to your desks

Grade 3s 6 sentences

(Students who are wearing blue and green walk to their desks)
(Students wearing white or black or pink walk to their desks quietly)
(The rest of the students walk to their desks)

The rest of you can now go to your seats

The students quietly work on their posters

Micheal and Sarah, I would like you two to work together

Micheal and Sarah work together because Micheal needs extra help and
Sarah is one of my grade 3s and will help Micheal.

Simon, if you need to you can use the computer to make

your poster

John and Kathy sit beside each other

John, can you work with Kathy; You can write out the words
and maybe Kathy can draw the pictures

(Lily goes to her seat that she sits at when doing work, away from the
other students)

At one of the tables my grade twos who need extra help

always sit together because I assigned their seats close to my
desk. I will sit with them for a few minutes to make sure they
understand what they need to do and that they are on track.

(Matthew works on his poster but is supervised and given assistance if

needed by his EA).

I start to walk around to see if any student needs help or has

questions.

Students work on their posters.

Boys and girls remember to be very descriptive when

advertising your product, you want to be able for your
audience to want to buy your product that you are selling
Use the examples of advertisements I have left out if you
need help
I dont see everyone using 3 colours on their posters, most
of you are just using one. Remember posters are supposed to
catch your attention

(students start picking up a different coloured crayon and start drawing

or colouring)
(students start to finish as much as they can)

5 more minutes to finish up your poster

(students stop)
Boys and Girls stop what you are doing, it is okay if you did
not finish

Consolidation & Connection (Reflect and Connect) (5-15 min.)

Help students demonstrate what they have learned, provide opportunities for consolidation and reflection.
Time12;25_-12:#0 (Indicate time breakdown of instructional
elements)
Students will get up and find a partner to share and present
their poster
I will walk around to see how well the students are able to
share their posters with one and another.
I will also see what some things they notice about each
others advertisements.

Lakehead University Orillia, 09 02 15

This is my poster, Its selling an airplane called the zoom plane

I know what youre trying to say in your ad, its that if you
wear that shirt you will become strong

Extension Activities/Next Steps (where will this lesson lead to next)

orally to their peers.
