law suits against the federal govt to protect the
rights of Native Nations guaranteed them by US
laws and treaties

AIM FUN FACT

1969: 300 members of AIM occupied Alcatraz Island
for 19 months
They said they were re-claiming the land and offered
to buy it for $24 in glass beads and red cloth (a
precedent set by white men in Manhattan 300 years
previous)

They spent the time broadcasting Radio Free

Alcatraz, the first Indian radio broadcasts, to the
San Francisco Bay Area

AMERICAN FEMINIST MOVEMENT

The

problem: in the 1960s, women were

Expected

to get married and start a family

Spending an average of 55 hours a week on
household chores
Legally subject to their husbands (few rights to
spouses earnings or property)
Required to prove their husbands had done
something wrong if they wanted a divorce
Limited in their job choice (teacher, nurse,
secretary)

AMERICAN FEMINIST MOVEMENT

1964: Civil Rights Act includes sex, but the it quickly
becomes apparent that the government would not
protect female workers
1966: National Organization for Women (NOW) founded
fights discrimination against women in court
The Womens Liberation Movement (different group)
sought to throw off the patriarchy

FEMINIST MOVEMENT FUN FACT

The FBI viewed the womens movement as an enemy

challenge to American values and a possible threat of
violence
It paid hundreds of women to infiltrate the movement
as informants to the FBI about possible attacks,
which created paranoia in the womens movement

FARM HANDS UNIONIZE

Farmers replaced the domestic workers in their
fields with Braceros (program ended in 1964)
Poor wages: Grape pickers were making an
average of .90/hour + .10/basket of grapes (1965)
Unsanitary conditions: One farm boss made
workers all drink from the same cup for water;
some were forced to pay to drink water while on
the job
Poor housing: $2+ per day for unheated metal
shacks often without indoor plumbing or cooking
facilities

FARM HANDS UNIONIZE

Several unions popped up in the 1960s
National Farm Workers Association (NFWA)
started by Cesar Chavez in 1963
Workers organized strikes for wage increases and
better treatment
By 1970, the unions had finally gained a foothold

1960S GAY RIGHTS MOVEMENT

homosexual acts

certain number of points
