KEMP Model Example

The following lesson was designed using the Kemp model. The instructional objectives
for this lesson are for students to solve place value related questions and to also
create/pose a place value based question for their classmates.
Instructional
Problems

The instruction problem addressed is a review the following place

value concepts: the place value chart, comparing numbers using place
value knowledge, rounding numbers with a vertical number line and
finding ten times more or less than a given number.

Learner
Grade: 4th
Characteristics: Age Range: 9 -10 years
Learner Skills: Visualizing and ordering
Prior Knowledge: Students have knowledge of (1) Place value in
isolation (2) the place value chart (3) basic rounding
Subject
Given four to six digit whole numbers students will be able to (1)
Content and
compare the two numbers and explain how they arrived at their answer
Task
(2) round a multi-digit number to a given place value and explain how
Components:
they arrived at their answer (3) create and pose a question to their peers
involving one of the place value concepts they have learned about.
Instructional
Objectives

Given four- six digit whole numbers students will be able to (1) solve
problems where they need to compare two numbers, round a number to
a given place value.
Students will create and pose a question to their peers that involves one
of the place value concepts that they have learned about through the
curriculum web. They are then to answer, also explaining their
thinking, to two classmates questions.

Sequencing
Content

Student will participate in a VoiceThread discussion, which starts with

a review of place value in the form of an instructional video. The
students will then answer and post explanations of their thinking on the
VoiceThread.
Students will then create and pose a question for their peers on the final
slide of the VoiceThread.
