Directors Notebook
Introduction
Personal Statement About Your Notebook: How You Selected Your Media, What You Learned
From This Process, How You Will Use Your Observations In Your Own Productions.
STANDARD 1.0: EXAMINE THE VIDEO PRODUCTION INDUSTRY
1.1: RESEARCH EVENTS THAT LED TO CURRENT PRACTICES
Introduction to Standard:
I selected this media best by simply looking for review of whatever I needed. I learned the
history of media and how over time, it has grown to a huge industry. I will use these
observations by pertaining them to the equipment and techniques for filming.
1.1.1 Develop a timeline for major technological developments and events in the history of
media
Title of Artifact: Media History Timeline Review
Creator: Digital Culture & Communication
Date of Entry: March 27th, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard:
This timeline helped me out quite a bit. It showed me when media first started and how it
worked out. I really like learning about the beginning of film and media.
1.1.2 Explain the importance of industry pioneers and significant moments in media history
Title of Artifact: Key Events in Media History
Creator: Sasha Lee
Date of Entry: March 28th, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard:
One significant date that happened was in 1895 when the Lumiere brothers created the first
motion picture camera. This was the birth of motion pictures and created a hobby and activity
for people to do.

1.1.3 Analyze the influence of mass media on society

Title of Artifact: The Roles and Influence of Mass Media
Creator: Josh Gramm
Date of Entry: March 29th, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
Starting with motion pictures, this slowly progressed to advertising on television. This resulted in
mass advertising not only on TV - but in movies, in photos, and on billboards. Society has seen
so much advertising that is has affected their daily life and it has become normal to see
advertising everyday.
1.2: INVESTIGATE INDUSTRY ETHICS AND LAWS
I selected this media so that it would encorporate every standard. I learned a lot from these
videos and mostly the codes and laws that are required to follow. I will use this by following
these rules as well when I film and edit.
1.2.1 Define terms applicable to ethics & laws (e.g., plagiarism, copyright law, libel, slander, etc.)
Title of Artifact: Look Whos Talking
Creator: Amy Heckerling
Date of Entry: March 30th, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
Look Whos Talking was one of my favorite movies to watch when I was little. It even had
sequels that I would laugh at for hours. But something I didnt know was that the writers for the
film also wrote Staggering Delivery which had similiar concepts and even direct word-for-word
lines made way before Look Whos Talking. There was a lawsuit yet Look Whos Talking is still
out today.
1.2.2 Discuss how to legally obtain and use source materials for production purposes
Title of Artifact: Copywrite Overview
Creator:Sulair
Date of Entry: March 31st, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
To legally obtain and use source materials, you first need to gain permission from the source
you wish to use. Then, if given permission, you need to state the sources name and the rights if

needed. You may need to pay the source to use their materials. Maks sure the agreement is in
writing.

1.2.3 Explain copyright laws/issues that pertain to video production

Title of Artifact: Legal Issues To Know
Creator: VideoMaker
Date of Entry: April 1st, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
One problem you can encounter is infringement. If you are using sources, you need to makes
sure that you that you cite the work correctly. The agreement needs to be in writing. Music can
also be a problem. Make sure in your production you cite exactly where and who the music is
from.
1.2.4 Summarize legal and ethical acquisition and use of digital materials, giving attribution
using established methods
Title of Artifact: Media Room
Creator: Robert Meyers
Date of Entry: April 2nd, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
You need to observe all laws and regulations. It is important to avoid conflicts of interest. You
need to maintain accurate and complete the company records. If you do not protect confidential
information there could be problems. Ethical concerts, such as executive officers and directors,
need to be watched.
1.2.5 Research and follow Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations
Title of Artifact: Federal Communications Commission Regulations
Creator: the FCC
Date of Entry: April 3rd, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
The Federal Communications Commission is an independent agency. It was created by the
United States government by Congressional statute. These regulations make sure the
communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable are watched in all fifty states, the
District of Columbia, and U.S. territories.
1.2.6 Discuss video and audio consents for assigned projects

Title of Artifact: Video Production Standards

Creator: Department of Education
Date of Entry: April 4th, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
These Video and audio consents describe what you do when assigned a project. They list the
rules and regulations of what to do and what not do to. These are very helpful when you are
filming and sourcing materials. This taught me to always be careful and make sure you are
taking your time during this process.
1.2.7 Discuss the First Amendment guarantees relating to video production
Title of Artifact: First Amendment
Creator: Constitution
Date of Entry: April 5th, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
This amendment is guaranteeing the freedom of speech and religion. Without this amendment,
video productions probably would not exist in America. Movies were designed to voice an
opinion and let directors speak their minds, even if nobody wants to hear it.
1.2.8 Explain proper attribution (citing) procedures
Title of Artifact: How To Cite Procedures
Creator: Prentice Hall
Date of Entry: April 6th, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
To cite procedures, it is basically a two step process, with smaller steps within them. Step one is
to note each source as you go, making sure you attribute ALL parts to the person or wherever
you are citing to. Step two is to make sure you have an agreement as well. If not, problems
could arise and something could go terribly wrong.
1.3: EXPLAIN STAGES OF THE VIDEO PRODUCTION PROCESS
Introduction to Standard: I chose my media by making sure it dealt with pre or post production. I
learned the basic jobs and productions of every member of the cast and crew. I will use this by
using the pre and post production rules and pertaining them to my own productions.

1.3.1 List the components of the pre-production phase (e.g., purpose, script writing, target
audience, budget, schedule, script writing, output medium, etc.)
Title of Artifact: Pre-Production Phase
Creator: After Effects
Date of Entry: April 6th, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
The pre-production phase is the process of fixing some of the elements involved in a film. Script
writing is when you plan out the dialogue and actions of characters. When developing a movie,
you need to target a certain type of audience, whether it been young teens or older adults. A
budget is when the creators of the movie balance out how much money they are going to need
and spend on the production.
1.3.2 Conduct a pre-production meeting to create a production plan
Title of Artifact: Pre-Production Meeting
Creator:Budo Videos
Date of Entry: April 7th, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
In this pre-production meeting, Budo Jake, a video crew member at Budo Videos sat down with
Eddie Bravo to discuss their latest production. They met in LA to talk about a production plan. In
this meeting, they mainly focused talking about a budget and how they were going to make a
script.
1.3.4 List the components of the production phase (e.g., selecting equipment, operating
equipment, interviewing, directing, lighting, audio, etc.)
Title of Artifact: Production Phases
Creator: STIR
Date of Entry: April 8th, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
In this video, I was shown how selecting and operating equipment is key to creating a good
movie. If you choose a camera, for example, that is great for slow motion but you need to shoot
in high motion, you are going to have a problem. Operating the equipment is key as well. If you
do not understand how to work, for example, a boom mic, ou are going to have difficulty filming
your production.

1.3.4 List the components of the post-production phase (e.g., video and audio editing, graphics,
output medium, etc.)
Title of Artifact: Components of Post-Production
Creator: Technicolor
Date of Entry: April 9th, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
In this video, you basically take a tour of what it is like inside a post-production phase. People
are editing different things. There is one editing the graphics of the movie, while one edits the
audio. It seems like they do not work together, but in reality, this is a huge team process that
takes up a lot of time.
1.3.5 List the steps in conducting a post-production meeting

Title of Artifact: How to Conduct a Post Production Meeting

Creator: Steve Covello
Date of Entry: April 10th
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
This guides you through on how to post produce. Its successful in showing specifically what to
do and where you are at. Without a post production meeting, I learned, that you might
jeopardize how the movie turns out. Everyone needs to be on the same page with each other.
1.4: INVESTIGATE VARIOUS ROLES IN VIDEO PRODUCTION
Introduction to Standard: I chose my media because it investigated various roles in video
production. I learned more specifically what each person does in a film. I will use this by
incorporating them into my own filming and assigning jobs when needed.
1.4.1 Summarize the roles of various personnel for video production projects (e.g., producer,
director, editor, camera operator, etc.)
Title of Artifact: Video Production People And What They Do
Creator:technicolor
Date of Entry: April 11th, 2015
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
This video guides you through on what each person works on during filming. A producer
basically supervises and funds the entire thing. The director films everything and make sure that

everything comes out exactly how he or she sees it. The editor edits the entire process of the
movie along with the directors help.
1.4.2 Develop appropriate communication skills when working with clients, crew, and talent
Title of Artifact: Communication Skills
Creator: tecnicolor
Date of Entry: April 12
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
When on set, you need to speak clearly and get your point across quickly. As a director, they
need to be able to explain exactly how they want. They are the ones directing, so this is their
movie coming to life. If something doesnt come out as they want, there is a lack of
communication.
1.5: EXPLORE CAREERS IN THE VIDEO INDUSTRY
Introduction to Standard: I used this media because it explored each career in the industry. I
learned even more about each job. I will use this by using each career in my films.
1.5.1 Research occupations found within the video production industry
Title of Artifact: Careers in the Film Industry
Creator: Ross
Date of Entry: April 13
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
One occupation in the film industry is being a director. You could also go into screenwriting,
where they develop scripts for films and TV shows. You can be a camera operator who
physically films the shots for the director. An editor is someone who edits through the entire
process of the movie which takes up to months just for one movie.
1.5.2 Compare major organizations or institutions involved with the video production industry
Title of Artifact: Dreamworks vs Disney
Creator: Dough L.
Date of Entry: April 14
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
Dreamworks is a gigantic organization that is involved with the video production industry. A lot of
people confuse Dreamworks to be apart of Disney, however, it is not. Disney and Dreamworks

are two major different companies. They are two of the top businesses that work in the film
industry and make billions of dollars every year.
1.5.3 Create a job description for a video production occupation
Title of Artifact: Director
Creator: Me
Date of Entry: April 14
Observations about how your artifact relates to the standard, and your evaluation of its success
or what it teaches about the standard.
Directors are one of the first people to be hired on a movie production. They must be on set at
all times during the process of filming. They will communicate with the actors as well as almost
every crew member. He or she will need to direct orders with a clear voice. After filming is
complete, they must be present through the entire time of the editing process.
