Thisexaminationhasnowelldefinedcurriculumasittestsallthoseareasofprofessionalknowledge,skillandvalueswhichreflectthe
consensusofwhatcomprisesgoodpracticeintheNHStoday.Theexaminationisdividedintofourmodules,allowsthreeyearstopassthe
variousmodules,whichcouldbetakenallinonceorsinglyinanyorder.Eachmodulecosts200.
Fourmodulesarepaperone,papertwo,thevideoandthevivas.
PaperOne(writtenpaper)
Thisconsistsof12ormorequestionstobeansweredinthreeandhalfhours.Theyconsistsofquestionsdesignedtoexaminetheabilityto
integrateandapplytheoreticalknowledgeandprofessionalvalues(modifiedessayquestions),questionsdesignedtotestknowledgeand
interpretationofgeneralpracticeliterature(hottopics),questionsdesignedtotestabilitytoevaluateandinterpretwrittenmaterial(critical
reading).
PaperTwo(MCQpaper)
Thisisamultiplechoicequestionnaire,whichtestsgeneralmedicalknowledgeandcriticalreading.Thequestionsarebasedonarticleand
reviewsprintedoverthepast18months.Nonegativemarking,soitisimportanttoanswerallthequestions.
Video
Youneedtosubmitsevenconsultationsofamaximumdurationof15minutes,ofwhichoneshouldinvolveachildandoneshouldbeof
psychologicalnature.
Thevideoworkbookclearlyoutlinesthemarkingcriteriaandyoushouldanalyseyourvideosinaccordancewiththese.Remembertokeep
yourconsentforms.Youarealsorequiredtosubmitcertificatesshowingyouarecompetentinbasiccardiopulmonaryresuscitationandinchild
healthsurveillance.
Vivas
Therearetwo20minutesoralexamsaboutsixweeksafterthewrittenpapers,usuallyheldattheendofJune.Thistestsyourdecisionmaking
andprofessionalvaluesunderpinningit.Itconsistsoftwoconsecutiveoralexaminationsconductedbytwoexaminers,eachlasting20
minutes.Practicevivasinyourstudygroupsorwithinyourtrainer.
Themostimportantrevisionmethodistouseyourownexperiencesthroughouttheyearasafoundationandselectappropriatereadingto
strengthentheareasofweakness.Keepadiaryofeventstocoverdifficultclinicalandnonclinicalissues,whicharisetouseforreflectionand
learning.
TheRoyalCollegeofGeneralPractitionershasproducedasetofinteractiveeducationalselfassessmentprogramsontwoCDROMs(PEP
2000)MedicalandPrimaryCare,containuptodateandinstructiveprogramsontheonarangeofprimaryhealthcarerelatedsubjects.One
oftheprogramscontainsanumberofsamplequestionsfromtheMRCGPexam.Theprogramhasbeendevelopedtohelpyoutoidentify
strengthsandtheweaknessinyourknowledgebase,andisgoodwayofpreparingfortheMCQexam.
