CourseDescription This course is designed to provide you with the opportunity to practiceandimproveyouroraland listeningskillsinFrench.Therewillbeanemphasisonimprovingthestudent’sspontaneousspeaking ability. Students willdiscussavarietyoftopicspertainingtoculture,currentevents,anddailylifein theFrancophoneworld.Duringdiscussions,studentswillimprovetheirvocabularyandgrammar,ask questions,interact,andreacttooneanotherinasafegroupsetting.Thisclassisdesignedtobringfun andentertainmenttoconversationinaclassroomsetting!

LearningOutcomes You will improve your ability to communicate in French by enriching your vocabulary, and strengthening your knowledge and ability to manipulate grammatical structures. You will learn to paraphraseandusecircumlocutions("talkaround")toexpresscomplicatedthoughtsforwhichyoudo nothavetheprecisevocabulary.

ParticipationPolicy Thisclassmeetsonceaweekfor55minutes,anditisconductedentirelyinFrench. Yourattendance and participation are mandatory. Students are expected to arrive on time and be prepared to contribute to discussions. You will receive a daily participation grade, based on the quality and quantityofyourparticipation: 5ptsforbeingwellprepared,activelyengagedduringclassandbeing creativewiththelanguage; 4ptsforshowingevidenceofpreparationforclass,andmakingsomeoral contributions; 3ptsforbeingpresentandshowingevidenceofpreparation,butdoesnotparticipate exceptwhenasked;lastlyifyoucometoclassbutareclearlynotpreparedforclassactivities,youwill

earneithera2or1,dependingonthedegreetowhichyourlackofpreparationimpedestheprogress

of others in the class. Speaking a language other than French will result in the reduction of participationpointsforthatday.Additionally,unlessusedduringapresentationwithpriorapproval, electronicdevicesarenotallowedandwillalsoreduceparticipationpoints.

AttendancePolicy You are allowed only one excused absence, which will be recorded as a grade of “0”. Additional absences will result in the lowering of your course grade. Latenesswillresultinanautomatic3for yourparticipationgradefortheday.

Presentations

Eachweek,oneofyouwillberequiredtoleadhalfoftheclasstime(25minutes)worthofdiscussion

on the topic. You should give a presentation (10‐15 minutes) andspendtheremainderofthetime

(10‐15minutes)facilitatingadiscussiononthetopic.By5pmontheFridaybeforetheseminaryouare

leading, youmustsendavideoorarticleonthistopictothewholeclassthattheymustpreparefor Tuesday. You should come prepared withquestionstoleadthediscussionand/oractivitiestodo.If youneedhelpwiththis,seeyourprofessortheweekbefore.

JournalReactions Two journal reactions will be due during the semester. These will be a one‐page, typed, double‐spacedpapersdueatthebeginningofclass.Thesecanbeareactiontoonespecificseminaror multiple (recent) seminars. You can summarize what we discussed and/or elaborate on the topic. These should be a personal reaction to a seminar that particularly interested you and how it has helped youdevelopyourFrench.Journalreactionswillbegradedwhollyforcreativity,languageuse andlevelofreflection.Latenesswillresultinasubtractionofpointsandjournalswillnotbeaccepted

morethan7daystardy.
