The Guides for the Mathematics Framework was very extensive and
elaborative. I do believe mathematic topics and standards need to be taught
all year round. A strong foundation in math prepares students for business,
medicine, science, engineer, and technology. As well as help solve logical
reasoning, problem-solving, and financial literacy. In the kindergarten
framework it states that, Kindergartners must learn how to count to 100
instead of 30. Second grade does not need to learn multiplication tables till
third grade and in geometry, students need to form and deconstruct shapes.
My math 107 class has prepared me by teaching base ten, place value,
multiplication, and division. I learned that there are so many ways to solve a
math problem. Most kids at a young age learn how to solve a problem by
using visuals. Manipulatives such as counters that can help children make
connections and help them understand mathematical concepts. Visual
learners can see whats going on and how its happening. It is important to
deliver different mathematical strategies for young children to fully
understand math. Otherwise kids will struggle in math and learn to dislike it.
I feel well prepared in the lower grades of mathematics. As a future,
Early Childhood Special Education teacher, I am well prepared to teach my
class number order, one-to-one correspondence, geometry, number sense,

patterns, and measurement. I feel less prepared in algebraic equations and

word problems. Ive always struggled with word problems unlike, algebraic
equations, word problems are a little more complex and require exceptional
skills to figure it out. Algebraic equations take some time to memorize and
apply to the appropriate math problems.
Since I have only taken math 107, I plan on using a few journals I have stored
where I briefly discussed math topics on place value, multiplication, and
division. I explain the importance of the topic and its relevance to real life
situations. My work samples contain explanations to specific mathematical
concepts. The purpose of my math journals in to take a written learning
approach where I elaborate some concepts and explain its importance rather
than typically solving an equation, Im explaining what the topic is and why
its important for children to know it. I also incorporated my personal
encounters with math in the past years of my schooling. My personal
experiences are incorporated in the journals because I wrote about the times
I experienced learning of that specific topic and I express my positive or
negative learning strategies.
