Topic/Concept/Skill: To review pronouns and learn what possessive pronouns are.

Related Standard:
2.W.6.1 Demonstrate command of English grammar and usage, focusing on:
2.W.6.1a Nouns/Pronouns Writing sentences that include common, proper, possessive, and
collective nouns, irregular plural nouns, and personal and possessive pronouns.

Background: Students have learned what nouns and normal pronouns are such as we, he,
her, etc.
Main Objective of Instruction: In order to review pronouns and identify possessive pronouns,
students will be able to verbally tell the teacher whether it is hers, his, ours, mine, its, theirs
while the teacher pulls different students objects out of a suitcase (knowledge) given that the
students review the different normal pronouns by individually completing a worksheet
(comprehension) in class before the bag activity.
Teacher Materials/Resources:
A big suitcase (to put different items in)
Items from around the classroom such a sign, a toy, a book, etc. (to put in the bag and
identify the possessive pronoun ours since it is the classrooms materials)
Personal items such as a certain pen, tape, stapler, etc. (to identify the possessive noun
hers since it would be my items, or to the students Miss Kistlers items)
A pronoun review worksheet (attached to the back of the lesson plan)
A possessive pronoun worksheet (also attached to the back of the lesson plan)
An Elmo to put the worksheet under and to help go over the worksheets with all of the
students
Student Materials:
Personal items that are labeled such as crayon boxes, name tags, white boards, etc. (to
put into the bag and identify the different pronouns such as hers, his, and mine
since it would be the students objects)
Marker (for the worksheets)

Pencil (to write name on the worksheet)

*Make sure every student has their name on their personal item so that they can be
returned as the activity goes on

Anticipatory Set (Introductory Approach): I will show a video of possessive pronouns:

Here is the URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZaMXYAu9h0 My suitcase for the items will
also be on a desk in the front of the classroom, that ways students will see it when they come in.
Instructional Procedures (Whole Group):
1. The students will come in and put their book bags and coats up, make sure everyone has
their bags in the cubbies. Some students tend to leave their book bags on the floor
sometimes.
2. The students will then turn in their homework from the night before. If they have not
turned in their homework, write their names down and deduct 5 minutes for each piece of
homework they are missing.
3. Make sure morning work has been put on everyones desk so that the kids can work on it
after they have turned in their homework and put their things away in the cubbies.
Morning work usually consists of math and language, but this morning it will be replaced
with a review worksheet over normal pronouns such as he, she, etc. The worksheet
will consist of 10 different sentences, and the students will take a marker out and circle all
of the pronouns in each sentence, as well as making their own sentence with pronouns in
it. I will also say to the class before they start on morning work, Choose one item out of
your desk and make sure your name is on it.
4. I will go over the morning work with the class by putting the worksheet under the Elmo,
and I will ask the students, Which pronoun did you circle? on each question. I will also
ask at the end of the worksheet, Who would like to share their pronoun sentence they
wrote?
5. Anticipatory: I will then show the possessive pronoun video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZaMXYAu9h0 and after the video is over, I will walk
up and open up my suitcase and say This suitcase is not his and its not hers, and it is
not even theirs, but it is mine. Since it is mine, its going with me on vacation then
proceed to act like I am leaving the room. This is to add humor before we start the lesson
and after I say this statement I will use the follow up question, Who can take a guess on
one possessive pronoun I used to explain my suitcase? Then after a couple of students
answer I will say, A possessive pronoun shows that something belongs to someone or
something.
6. I will call the students up by how they are grouped in their desks, and ask them to bring
their one labeled item to put into my suitcase. As each group comes up to the suitcase I
will ask, Did you label your item?
7. After each student has put an item in the suitcase, I will pull out 2 items, one of which will
be mine, and the other will be another students. When I pull out one of my items I will
say, This is mine, but it is not yours, so what pronoun would you use to say it is Miss
Kistlers? The whole class would answer, It is hers. When I pull out one of the students
items I will say, Whos item is this? One student will answer and say, It is mine. Then I
will ask the class and they will say, The item is hers/his. (Verbal) The class as a whole
will only do this for the first 2 items that I pull out, that way the class understands the
instructions.
8. After my two examples, each student will have one chance to come and pull an item out of
my suitcase (Bodily/Kinesthetic) and the student will ask the questions previously
stated to the class. I will be there to assist the student in asking the questions, as well as
walking around the room to help students answer the questions. Also, if a student pulls out
a classroom object then we will all say, This is ours.

Important Note: Make sure students pull out an object quickly and that they are not
digging around in the suitcase for a long time.
9. Once everyone has pulled an item out, make sure all items have been returned and pass
out the possessive pronoun worksheet. The students may work on the worksheet in class,
but if we are out of time it will be assigned for homework.
10.
English/ Language Arts time is now over.
Provisions for Individual and/or Group Differences:

Closure: The possessive pronoun worksheet will end the lesson. The worksheet will be set up
just like the pronoun review worksheet, where there are 10 sentences and each student must
circle the correct possessive pronoun that fits into the sentence.

Evaluation of Learning: The evaluation of learning will be the grading of the possessive
pronoun worksheet.

Independent Practice: If there is enough time at the end of the lesson to work on the
worksheet, I will walk around and individually help students who seem to be struggling with the
topic. If students finish their worksheet early, then they may sit wherever they would like in the
room and silently read.
