Thiswasmy4thinterview,butmy3rdwithapediatriconcologist/hematologist.Thiswas
actuallyasurpriseinterview,becausewhenIaskedmypreviousinterviewee,Dr.Stegner,Ifshe
knewofanyoneelsethatwouldbewillingtohaveaninterviewwithme,shejustcalledsomeone
andtookmetoaroomwhereotherdoctorswere.Iendedupinterviewingtwomorepeople,and
Dr.Wattwasoneofthem.ThroughthisinterviewImainlywantedtofindoutaboutwhat
beneficialstepsDr.Watttooktogetwheresheisnow,educationwiseandpracticewise.Dr.
Watttoldmeessentiallyittakesalotofhardworktobecomeapediatric
oncologist/hematologist.Shetoldmethatitisveryimportanttogetgoodgradesandgotoa
goodschoolaswellasbroadeningoutandparticipatingindifferentextracurricularactivities.
SomeofthehighlightsofthisinterviewincludedlearningabouthowDr.Wattcopedwiththe
emotionalstressofknowingthatthisfieldincludessomepatientsnotsurviving.Unlikeinoneof
mypreviousinterviewswherethedoctorsaidthatshefounddifferentoutletstohelphercope
withthisstress(Klesseinterview,2015),Dr.Wattsaidthatbecauseyoucreateareallyclose
bondwiththepatientfamilies,supportingthefamiliesandhavingthatclosebondmakesit
easiertocopewiththisstress.Inthefuture,IamgoingtotakeDr.Wattsadviceonwhatshe
didtogetwheresheisnow.Iwillworkhardtogetgoodgradesincollegeandparticipatein
differentextracurricular.Inthefuture,ifIdodecidetobecomeapediatric
oncologist/hematologist,Ithinkthatoneofthemainreasonswillbebecauseoftheclosebond
thatthesedoctorsmakewiththepatientfamilies.WhenIamadoctor,Idon'tjustwanttoseea
patientandtheirfamiliesafewtimestilltheyarecuredandneverseethemagain.Iwantto
haveacloserelationshipwiththesepatientsandfamiliesinordertosupportthemineverywayI
can.
OnethingIfoundsurprisingduringthisinterviewwasthatDr.Wattactuallystudiedoutof
stateandthemcameheretoChildrens.Dr.WattwenttocollegeatHarvardUniversityandthen
formedicalschool,wenttoaMedicalschoolinSanAntonioanddidherresidencyand
fellowshipatEmoryUniversityandthencametoChildrens.Dr.Watthashadanexceptional
educationascanbeseenintheschoolssheattended.Ijustfounditsurprisingthatafterallof
thetravelingshecametoChildren'sinsteadofstayingatEmory,becausemanypeopletoday,
wherevertheycompletetheirresidencyandfellowship,tendtostaythereforacareer.Because
manypeople,whostudyatUTSouthwestern,dotheirfellowshipatChildrens,theyendup
workingthereaswell.
AfterhavingthisinterviewIhavemorequestionsonthingsthatIcoulddoincollegeto
makethemostoutofmyexperienceanddifferentwaystopreparemyselfformedicalschool.As
Dr.Wattsaid,itisimportanttoworkhardandgetgoodgrades,soIwanttolearnmoreabout
whatexactlythesedoctorsdidtogetwheretheyarenow.Iwanttoknowiftheyvolunteeredand
