A12 Welcome to the Neighbourhood, 2016

Welcome

From the MLA for

Langley.

t is my pleasure to extend my personal welcome to

Langley.
Langley is the perfect community in which to work,
live and raise a family. This community offers many
amenities, parks and lots of shopping to meet the needs
of the citizens. Families will appreciate the vast array of
sports and services available for their children to participate in.
Langley has a unique
blend of country living
with a complementary
blend of city atmosphere.
With everything from a
growing wine industry
to its reputation as the
Horse Capital of BC,
Langley has something
for everyone.
This community has a
proud history of volunteerism. People from all
ages and walks of life
devote countless hours
to make Langley a better
place and to provide services to those people who
MLA Mary Polak
need assistance in their
daily lives.
As the MLA for Langley I am proud to represent this
community and I look forward to continuing my work for
many years to come.
I trust that if you have just moved here, you will learn
to love this community as much as those of us who have
made this our home.

Mary Polak,

Member of the Legislative Assembly,

Langley

A community of communities
Langley has many
neighbourhoods, each with
its own character.

hat is Langley like?

It depends very
much on which
Langley youre talking
about. The Langleys are two municipalities, and at least seven separate neighbourhoods.
Treat Langley as a large, square
clock and start at midnight to
find the first community Fort
Langley, the birthplace of Langley
and of British Columbia. Founded
as a fur-trading settlement, the
Fort is now known for historic
architecture and its boutiques and
cafs on its main street, Glover
Road. It is one of Langleys smaller
communities with 3,800 people.
Head east and far south, and
you reach Aldergrove, another
historic area, and one expected to
see some growth soon. (Read more
about Aldergrove in our neighbourhood spotlight on page A10.)
Heading back west from
Aldergrove will take you through
a broad stretch of rural Langley.
Not a neighbourhood itself, the
rural areas nevertheless are home
to about 23,000 residents. They
include acreages, hobby farms,
large agricultural operations, and
pockets of housing development.
Within the broader rural regions
you can find small crossroads with
a few stores, churches, or com-

munity halls that have retained
their own identity, such as Milner,
Harmsworth, and Patricia.
The first major community west
of Aldergrove is Murrayville, home
to 10,300 people, The W.C. Blair
Pool, and the Langley Memorial
Hospital. While most of the neighbourhood is suburban, there are a
significant number of seniors complexes in the area, taking advantage of the walkable town core and
proximity to the hospital.
Continuing to the southwest
corner of Langley we reach
Brookswood and Fernridge,
and its 13,200 residents. Slated
for some future development,
Fernridge remains mostly semirural, while Brookswood is a quiet
community of quarter-acre lots,

schools, and a pair of small commercial cores on 200th Street and

208th Street.
Swinging up to the north,
Brookswood abuts Langley City.
The City split off from the larger
Township in the 1950s. A mere
two miles on a side, this small
town has about 26,000 residents
and a high density of shops and
other downtown amenities, including the Cascades Casino and the
regions largest public library.
North of the City is Willoughby.
A few years ago Willoughby was
a rural area, but rapid development has turned it into the
most densely populated part of
Langley Township, with more
than 29,000 residents and more
arriving every day. You know
you are in Willoughby when you
are in the midst of homes, townhouses, and construction sites for
future homes and townhouses. As
with Brookswood to the south,
200th Street and 208th Street are
the main arteries for this area.
Willoughby is home to the Langley
Events Centre, the Townships largest ice arena and sports complex.
North across the Trans Canada
Highway you can find Walnut
Grove. Like Willoughby, it was a
quiet farming area until wholesale
development in the 1980s and
1990s. A community defined by
single-family homes on cul-de-sacs,
Walnut Groves main drag is 88th
Avenue. Its centre is the Walnut
Grove Recreation Centre, which
includes a pool, gymnasium,
library and other amenities.
