Essential Questions:
How can you use Google Drive to collaborate with your
department and other teachers?
How can students use Google Drive to collaboratively
learn?
Materials:
Website: http://tcastle1.wix.com/technology-workshop
All Handouts are linked on the website via Google Drive
Participants were asked to bring their laptops and a Gmail
address already set up if they want to experience the Drive

Instructional Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
Make a Google Document and share with someone with an
email address and/or a link
Make a Google Presentation and share with someone with
an email address and/or a link
Make a Google Form, change the theme, and share with
someone with an email address and/or a link

Upload a document into Google Drive to share with

someone with an email address and/or a link
Procedures:
Welcome, pull up website on SMART board ask participants
to log into Gmail account- participants were asked to bring their
laptops and have a Gmail account ready to go if they want to try
Google Drive for themselves.
Show video from website Google Docs in Plain English,
explain that the video was made in 2007, so it is a little outdated
the overall idea is the same (even if the names and steps are a
little different)
Show participants the documents on website Benefits of
Google drive Google Drive Instructions and point out the
screencasts, agenda and the lesson plan. There are no hard
copies of any of the documents; all are located on Google Drive.
We felt like this was the best support of the Drive that running off
copies would be counterproductive.
Open Google Drive, show participants how to access drive
on their computer and start a new document and share the
document. Make sure to show how to edit permissions. For
example, show the participants how to change can edit, can
view or to share with a link.
Show participants how to upload a PowerPoint document in
Google Drive and share it with their colleagues. The upload
feature is very important for collaboration because people can
share a document and then edit it, save it to their own computer
and make it more personalized. This feature can also be very
helpful when teachers are collaborating while making a test.
Teachers can go on with an editable link and add their test
questions to the document.
Google Presentation is great for in classroom collaboration
as well. Show the participants (if time permits) an example of a
Google Presentation that I started and then uploaded the link on
my website. My students then went onto the document and
added their part to the presentation. One important tip: Google
Drive does tend to jam up if many people are on there at once,
especially on computers with slow processors. To combat this, I
had two of my computers (my teacher laptop and my desktop

presentation station) ready for the students to hop on if they

need to.
Show participants how to make a Google Form, including
change the theme, share the form and collect the responses.
Google Form is an excellent way to gather data and responses.
When showing how to construct a Google Form, make sure to
show one of each question type so that the participants can see
the different types available. The themes are a nice touch and
can give the person that is making the form a venue to
personalize the form. As with Docs and presentation, show the
participants how to set permissions and share the form with a
link. Also, pull up the spreadsheet and show them how the
responses generate. The best way to do this is to have them
click on a sample form from my website and fill it out, while the
response spreadsheet is open on the SMART board.
Ticket out the door, have the participants share a Google
form with me before they leave.
Follow-Up Observations: The workshop went rather smoothly, though
there were a few questions that I wasnt prepared for (see more in my
reflections). Overall the experience went really well.
