History
AlthoughaRomannecropolishasbeenexcavated
inthearea,Luinoismentionedbydocumentsonly
in1169AD,asLuvino.IntheMiddleAgesitwas
contentedbetweenpowerfulfamiliesfromComo
andMilan,butwasabletomaintainitsstatusasa
freecommune.AspartoftheDuchyofMilan,it
wasacquiredbySpainintheearly16thcentury
and,in1541,kingCharlesVgaveitrighttoholda
marketinalternancewithMaccagno,whohad
beenenjoyingitalonesofar.Theconcessionwas
confirmedin1786.
Herein1848ItalianpatriotsfromPiedmontrose
againsttheAustrianoccupation.Giuseppe
GaribaldifoughthereagainsttheAustrians,and
LuinolaterwasthefirstcityinItalytoerecta
monumenttohim(1867).

TheareaofLuinounderwentahigh
industrializationprocess,startingfromthelate
19thcentury,whichcausedsignificantecological
damagetotheeponymousLake.

especiallyforfreighttrainstotheGotthard
railway.
PassengertrafficisservedbythelineS30ofthe
Ticinorailwaynetwork,operatedbythe
internationalcompanyTiLo,andbytheregional
trainstoGallarate,operatedbytheLombard
railwaycompanyTrenord.

Bytheendofthe19thcentury,Luinowasa
heavilyindustrialisedtownthetextilesindustry
beingparticularlystronghere,duetothemany
watercourseswhichcouldbeusedtopowerthe
machineryandmanytextilefactoriesweresetup
inthelocalareabySwissindustrialists.Although
someshadowsofthispasttradedoremaininthe
namesoflocalstreetsandvillas(VillaHussy,via
StehliintheneighbouringGermignaga),the
activityinthissectorhasnowdiminished
considerably.
Onephenomenonwhichisextremelywidespread
isthepracticeoflocalresidentswhotravelevery
daytoworkinSwitzerland.Thesesocalled
frontalieri(i.e.'borderers')makeLuinoand
neighbouringtownsandvillagesdormitorytowns
tosomeextent.
