derivefrom"Bardus",or"Barrio",thelast
elephantofHannibal'sarmy,whosupposedlydied
hereduringthemarchtoRome.Historically,the
namestemsfromtheLombardnobilitywho
establishedthemselvesinBardiaround600AD.In
1000thebishopofPiacenzatookupresidence
here.
In1257theLandiofPiacenzaacquiredit,
remaininglordofBardiforthefollowingfour
centuries.In1269thecastlewasstormedbyan
armyledbyAlbertoFontana,andthecommuneof
Piacenzaheldituntil1307,whenEmperorHenry
VIIgaveitbacktoUmbertinoIILandi.GaleazzoI
ViscontiofMilanobtainedanotablevictoryover
theGuelphsinthenearbyonNovember29,1321.
In1381theLandiweredeclaredformally
independentbyGianGaleazzoVisconti,and
obtainedacompleteautonomyin1415.
