acquaintedwiththeCountessZ,oneofthemostaccomplishedbeautiesatCourt,
andthereigningbelleofSt.Petersburg.
TheCountessCarolinewasawidowoftwentythree!Shehadbeenmarriedat
twenty,andaboutamonthafterhermarriageherhusbandhadbeenkilledinaduel
withanEnglishman.
TheCountesshadagaitandlookproudandhaughtyasaJuno,herovalfaceand
majesticfigureexcitedmyhighestadmiration,andIdeterminedifpossibletomake
hermine.
Enteringintoaconversationwithher,Ifoundthatshewaspleasedwithmy
company,andmuchmorewithmyperson.
Accomplishedasshewas,CarolineZhadthevicepeculiartoallRussians,of
drinkinglargequantitiesofbrandy.Infact,shedranksomuchthatknowingshe
livedinalargepalace,withnoonebutherserfs,Iformedtheresolutionofmaking
herminethatsamenight.
Plyingherwithbrandytilllateinthemorning,shebecamesomuchexcitedas
nottobeabletocontrolherself.Ikeptclosebyhersidethroughoutthenight,tillthe
ballbrokeup.Ihumblyaskedpermissiontobeherescorthome.
Engagingherinalaughingconversation,Iputthequestiontoheraswe
descendedthepalacestairs,whichthegiddyyoungcreature,nearlyintoxicatedwith
brandy,atonceaccepted.
Ihandedherintothecarriage,andbiddingthedrivergofast,inamomentwe
wereatherpalace.
OnalightingsheinvitedmeinaninvitationwhichIpromptlyaccepted,and
ledmeupaflightoflargestairsintoherowndressingroom.Somuchwasshe
affectedbythebrandyshehaddrunkthatshehardlyknewwhatshewasdoing.
Layingoffherbonnetandshawlsherangthebell,andtwowaitingmaids
entered.Askingtobeexcusedforafewminutes,sheretiredtoherboudoir,
followedbyherattendants,andinashorttimereappearedinadifferentdress,a
looseflowinggownofrichcashmere.

vialIalwayscarriedaboutme,intoaglassofbrandy,Ipresentedittoher,andshe
drankitoff.
Itranlikeliquidfirethroughherveins,hereyessparkledwithlicentiousness,
herheartheavedandpalpitatedwiththefiercedesireswhichwereconsumingher.

(inhermaleattire)andIalightedatthehouseoftheCountess,aridwewereatonce
shownintothedressingroomofwhichIhavebeforetold.

whichIhadpurchasedinParis.Ateitherendplayedabeautifulfountain,whilein
thecentrewasalargemarblebasin,inwhichplayedathirdfountain.Thefigurethat
castupthewaterwasastatueofafemalelyingdown,soarrangedthatsheseemedto
befloatingonherbackinthewater,thejetd'eauburstfromhercunt,andascended
nearlytotheceiling,makingashowerbathtoanyonewhowouldbeseatedonthe
figure.
Thesidewindowsopenedontoabalcony,whichoverlookedthesea.
OntheoppositesideofthecorridorIhadconvertedthewholesuiteof
apartmentsintoonelargeroom,whichassoonastheupholstererarrivedwastobe
furnishedwithfiftybeds.
ThesuiteofapartmentsonthesameflooroftheadjoiningwingIhadconverted
intoonelargebathingroom.Inthisroomwasamarblebath,inwhichfiftypeople
