Quality of Instruction.
1. Instructional Design and Lesson Planning. Applying concepts from human development
and learning theories, the effective educator consistently:
a. Aligns instruction with state-adopted standards at the appropriate level of rigor;

Above is an excerpt from a previous lesson I did. For one of my observed lessons I used four
standards. Utilizing several standards enables me to provide a well-rounded lesson for the
students. Focusing on more than one standard calls for my lesson to be very detailed and indepth. Using the appropriate standards is also a great reminder for me while Im planning my
lessons to focus on meeting those standards. To model these standards in the lesson I did a turnand-talk to get the students to answer questions I had about key details in the story we were
reading. I incorporated a writing component to my literacy standards to make it an allencompassing language arts lesson.
Looking back on how I started with my lesson planning and focusing on the details each time I
plan a thorough formal lesson, I realize how far Ive come.

d. Selects appropriate formative assessments to monitor learning;

This artifact was from one of my formal lesson plans. Throughout my internships, Ive noticed
how my formative assessments have gotten more specific and tailored to the experience I want
my students to have during the lesson. I want my students to interact with me and with each
other. Also, it is important to be sure that the formative assessment I am giving them is a possible
assessment to have with the type of students I have. I take this into account from knowing who
your students are and what they are capable of.

b. Sequences lessons and concepts to ensure coherence and required prior knowledge;

This artifact is a picture of my lesson plans for the week, we began a new unit of math focusing
on 3D shapes. The students first needed to know about the parts of a 3D shape, which included
the vocabulary, then to learn the 3D shapes themselves. Teaching students vocabulary first and
distinguishing 3D shapes from 2D shapes is what has made our math time more successful and
enjoyable. They have the foundational knowledge needed to learn about the 3D shapes in our
unit.

and comprehensive knowledge of the subject taught to:
i. Support, encourage, and provide immediate and specific feedback to students to promote
student achievement;

This artifact is a picture of me writing feedback in one of my students journals. I have a


classroom of kindergartners so the majority of them are unable to read my feedback, however I
do conference with them and tell them what message Ive written to them. Whatever constructive
criticism I give them, I make sure to speak about it positively, as not to discourage their
beginning journey of writing.

e. uses variety of data, independently and in collaboration with colleagues, to evaluate student
learning outcomes, adjust planning and continuously improve the effectiveness of lessons.

This artifact is a picture of a message to the students in the classroom that the kindergarten
teachers are in their weekly PLC meeting. In the PLC meetings, math data (unit assessment
tasks), RTI data, and literacy data are shared. Teachers talk about students attendance and
academic performance as well. This meeting lasts for about 40 minutes and then the teachers
pick their students up from the schools lunchroom.
