Parametrics are functions given with equations for both x and y in terms of a
third value (often time)
y=Y(t)
x=X(t)

To graph a parametric equation, convert to (x,y) coordinates:

ex: y=3t
x=t + 1

y=3t
y=3(x-1)
y=3x 3

To take the derivative of a parametric, the form is as follows:

dy

dx

ex:
dy
dt

y 3t 2
x sin t

Arc Length: The arc length of a parametric equation can be expressed as:
b

2
( dydt )2 ( dx
)
dt

Ex: Find the arc length from 1,2 of

x=3t
y=t2 + 2t 3
x

2x

y=( 3 )2 + 3 -3

arc length = 4.263
