Lesson Objectives: Given a lecture on the infectious process, students will be able to
complete the 10 question multiple choice assessment with 90% accuracy.
Time (length of lesson): 49 minutes
Equipment and Materials needed: black pen, handout, computer with smartboard,
powerpoint

lesson:

processes, or information presented in a text by paraphrasing them in simpler but still

Introduction:
Laboratory careers include workers with a broad range of interests and abilities.
Opportunities include clinical laboratory, blood banking, research, and related
fields in life science.
Body:
Students will be placed into groups of 4. Each group will be given a large piece
of paper and marker. Each group will have a recorder of ideas. In the group,
students will come up with various infections such as cold and attempt to come
up with how the infections are spread. Students will have 8 minutes to
brainstorm their answers.

Following the brainstorming, students will be redirected to lecture. Discuss the
infectious process explaining each part of the process (agent, reservoir,
transmission, entry, incubation, communicability, and host. Students will be
questioned to ensure they understand each part of the process.
Case studies - Tell students that they will work on real-life cases that
demonstrate different ways to prevent the spread of an infectious germ. Divide
students into four or more small groups and assign one of the following case
studies to a group: a. Diarrheal diseases b. HIV/AIDS-Ryan White c. Smallpox
d. Malaria
Hand out copies of the assigned case study and the Case Study Notes sheet to
each student to work in their small groups and complete the Case Study sheet.
Have each group present their completed Case Study Notes to the class. Use the
notes on the Teachers Case Study Notes to help students consider multiple
perspectives of understanding and solving health problems.
