PRE-AMPLIFIER
DESIGN FOR GUITAR
PICKUP

Introduction
This lab requires the engineer to design and
analyze pre-amplifier design for guitar pickup.
A piezoelectric pickup sensors convert
mechanical vibrations into a proportional
electrical signal. The frequency response of the
circuit will be analyze. The circuit will be
confirmed using a bode plot.

2. Next do the calculations for the low pass

filter.
To do this calculate the C values using the
equation f = 1/2RC.
Change the equation to RC = 1/2f.
f will equal 17,000Hz.
RC = 9.36E-6 sec

Components Needed

R is the constant value for the high pass filter so

R will be assumed to be 100k.

Resistors: one 112.41k, one 224.83k, and

two 100k,

Equation C = 9.36E-6/100E3

2 741C op-amp
Capacitors: two 1000 pF, two 0.01 F, one
66.19pF and one 132.38pF
Positive and negative 15 volt power supply
Procedures
1. Do the calculations for the high pass filter.
To do this calculate the R values using the
equation f = 1/2RC.
Change the equation to RC = 1/2f.
f will equal 1000Hz.
RC = 159E-6 sec

C= 93.621E-12 or 93.621pF.
Since R is the constant for the low pass the
capitor (C1) used in the feedback loop must
equal 1.414C and the capitor (C2) which shorts
unwanted signals to ground must equal 0.717C.
C1= 1.414pF
C2= .707pF
3. Implement the circuit in Multisimm and
validate the calculations with the oscilloscope
and bode plot.
4. Prepare a detailed report and include the
calculations. Multisimm results, actual
implementation, and oscilloscope waveforms.
Discuss your findings and challenges.

C is the constant value for the high pass filter so

C = 1000pF.
Equation R = 159E-6/1000E-12
R= 159E3 or 159k.
Since C is the constant for the high pass the
resistor (R3) used in the feedback loop must
equal .707R and the resistor (R4) which shorts
unwanted signals to ground must equal 1.414R.
R3= 6.62k
R4= 13.2k

Results
High pass filter
RC = 1/2f
RC = 1/ 2*1E3 Hz
RC = 159E-6 sec
C = 1000E-12 F
R = 159E-6/1000E-12F
R= 159E3 or 159k.
R4 = 1.414R

R4 = 13.2k
R3 = .707R
R3 = 6.62k
R4/R3 = 2Low pass filter
RC = 1/2f

Bode plot measuring at 17kHz

RC = 1/ 2*17E3 Hz
RC = 9.36 E-6 sec
Assuming R= 100E3
C = 9.36E-6/100E3R
C = 159E3 or 159k.
C1 = 1.414C
C1= 1.414pF

The comparison between the input at the top and the output at the
bottom.

C2 = .707C
C2= .707pF
C1/C2 =2

Mistakes
The process started pretty rough.
First the low pass filter was put in first and the
signal never develop.
When the filters were switch the calculations
were still reversed as if the low pass filter was
first and the signal filtered much higher than
expected.
