Joe Schweninger's Cultural Shock
The 1st memory I have of CBC was the cultural shock I experienced when I entered as a freshmen way back in 1951. My graduation class
at St. Joseph’s in Manchester consisted of 4 boys and 2 girls. Manchester , of course, is 6-7 miles west of Lindbergh Blvd (still pretty
much the western edge of the civilized world in the early fifties). Good grief, it wasn’t until years later that I realized I grew up in ‘West
County’.
I car-pooled with my dad into Webster Groves where I caught a McCausland-Delor bus to the Maplewood ‘Loop’, then up Bellevue on a
City Limits bus to 6501 Clayton Road. These weren’t just any buses, they were St Louis Public Service buses; not St Louis County
buses!) “Who are all these guys on this bus? They seem to know everybody else and appear to be so ‘experienced’. Those 2 guys over
there look like they shave!” My life on the ‘turnip truck’ was about to end.
The 1st guy I remember at CBC is Vince Comparato (God bless him). Vince sure looked ‘grown-up’, and as it turned out, he probably was;
since he wasn’t much bigger when we graduated. His smile however was always big. And then there was Gary Dudley; he was big
enough to go to work!
I occupied bench space on the Cee football team (Was that Bill Rogers sitting next to me?). What an experience with coach Klemm! He
seemed to be frustrated a good deal of the time. I remember at the end of the season, as The Coach reminisced… He regretted that he
hadn’t stood up in front of us at the first practice with a football in hand and said, “Gentlemen, This is a FOOTBALL”.
A visual remembrance, from those days, was a game at old Public Schools stadium with Jim Gallo coming off the field with his face pretty
beat up and going right back in after a play or two. I thought, “That’s a scrappy guy”. Come to think of it though, there were a lot of scrappy
guys on the team.
The worst aspect of this C-team experience was getting home after practice; especially when daylight saving time ended. I had to get
home to Carman road. That meant hitchhiking all the way, with the constant fear that the guy in the car headed toward me was Major
Winiarczyk (a sweetheart if there every was one).

Some of the R.O.T.C. memories are learning the manual of arms and doing drills and marching around the track during
military classes on cold days. Also as freshmen, while the Korean War was going on, seeing the seniors taking bayonet
training on the west field; and also after recreation period forming lines with whistles blowing
and marching into the building in about three minutes – probably to the envy of all other school
administration; and also the yearly march to St. Luke’s Church and opening year Mass.
Remember the federal inspection, the parade and number of cadets fainting during the inspec-
tion, and “M1 thumbs” and the march, “The Thunderer.”
I remember Brother Joel’s class on trigonometry and the multiplication and division of seem-
ingly infinite numbers I the days before calculators.
I remember Brother Laurence Matthias after our usual free discussion at the beginning of class saying almost curtly,
“The subject, gentlemen, is now chemistry (or religion).
Remember when the classes were reduced in the fall of 1954 when the seniors in the National Guard had to go to Jeff
City during the prison riot?

Do You Remember???
Sit back, relax, listen, read, & smile. Kind of reminds you to stop &
smell the roses of life, and to give thanks to God for life and memories.
You got your windshield cleaned, oil checked, and gas pumped, without asking, all for free, every time?
And you didn't pay for air? And, you got trading stamps to boot?
Laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the
box?
It was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real res-
taurant with your parents?
They threatened to keep kids back a grade if they failed. . and they did?
When a 57 Chevy was everyone's dream car...to cruise, peel out, lay
rubber or watch submarine races, and people went steady?
No one ever asked where the car keys were because they were always in the car, in the ignition, and the doors were
never locked?
Lying on your back in the grass with your friends and saying things like,
"That cloud looks like a .."
and playing baseball with no adults to help kids with the rules of the game?
Stuff from the store came without safety caps and hermetic seals
because no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger?
And with all our progress, don't you just wish, just once, you could slip back in time and savor the slower pace, and
share it with the children of today?
------------------------------------------------------------
When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited the student at home?
Basically we were in fear for our lives, but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc.
Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat!
But we survived because their love was greater than
the threat.

What ever happened to . . .
Remember that guy who was with you in your freshman or sophomore class that suddenly “disappeared”?
You may remember his name - or his face - or not much anything about him, but you do remember. Here’s a
list of students that attended CBC along with their home room number, but did not graduate for one reason or
another. They all would have been a part of the class of 1955 had they stuck around.
