Water Quality Lab Water

Quality Lab
By: Kenia, Jorge, Echia and Sanchiago.

Experiment Question
Which water is better quality: tap water or bottled water?
How can tests for ph, dissolved oxygen, phosphates,
nitrates, chlorine, copper and total dissolved solids help
us understand the quality of water?

Background information
Acid rain and chemicals from factories causes the pH of the
water to decrease making it more acid. Drinking this water
can make people sick and also could kill fish and animals
that live in the water.
Phosphates is a nutrient that underwater plants need to grow.
Too much detergents or soaps that humans use can increase
this in the water causing an algae bloom. This can be harmful
if there is more than 3 parts per million.

Background information: Water quality Factor 1

Nitrates
what is the healthy range for this water quality factor? 0.1-0.23
how does this get into the water? nitrogen enters the water from sewage.
why is it bad for the water? it can affect the ability of our blood to carry oxygen.

Background information: Water quality Factor 2

Dib one test stick into at least a 250ml (about 10 sec)
water sample with a constant, gentle back and forth motion
for 10 seconds. Remove the strip and shake once, briskly
remove the strip and shake once, brisky to remove excess
water, wait 15 seconds and match the color with the closest
color.

Hypothesis
If we test tap water and bottled water, I hypothesis that
the water from bottled water will be higher better quality
because its filtered and maybe they put some other things
so we cannot get sick.

Independent/dependent variable
the different types of water we will be testing are:
filtered, bottled, from the sink, zero water, distilled.

the different water quality factors we will be testing the

water for are: ph, phosphates, nitrates, lead, chlorine.

control: water quality standards

we comparing the water because we wanna know
if is it clean.

Procedure
pH: Dip one test strip into water sample for 10 seconds.
Remove and wait 15 seconds. Water colors for pH and total
Alkalini before 30 seconds has passed.
Chlorine: Dip one test strip into at least 250ml (about 10
oz) water sample with a constant, gentle back and forth
motion for 10 seconds. Remove the strip and shake once,
brisky, to remove excess water. Wait 15 seconds and match
Free Chlorine&Total Chlorine color with closest color.

Conclusion 1
in conclusion we learned that the tap water doesnt have
chlorine and copper, also tap water has a high level of PH.
and bottled water is the most safe to drink, tapp water is
the least.
