Career Research Neurosurgeon

The road to becoming a neurosurgeon is a very long, difficult one.


Many different classes and degrees are required along with a residency to
become a Neurosurgeon. Some of the classes you must take for Pre-Med
Undergraduate education are:

After those classes are complete, a student will then enroll in a Residency
program. According to the NYU School of Medicine, Toward the end of
medical school, medical students interested in a career in neurosurgery will
apply for a residency training program at an academic medical center
through The National Residency Matching Program (NMRP), the central
application source for residency applicants. Statistically, a current U.S.
medical school graduate, applying for the first time, has an excellent chance
- greater than 80% - of obtaining a residency position in neurosurgery.
Applicants can increase their likelihood of matching at the program of their
choice by having excellent medical school grades, USMLE test scores,
participation and publication of research, and letters of recommendation.
Applicants may also to choose to complete away electives.
Residencies are very important because they provide added skill for
the Medical student to gain. It also allows them to gain experience in
stressful situations, this experience will serve them good in a situation when
they are a neurosurgeon. Neurosurgeon tasks include:
Discuss outcomes and potential courses of action with patients, and assist
them in the decision-making process.
Perform surgical procedures, both exploratory and for treatment.
Document and track all treatments, diagnoses, medications, and other
health data.
Interview patients, evaluate test results, and diagnose conditions or the
absence of conditions.

Teach medical students and supervise residents.


The average salary for a Neurosurgeon is $393,340 per year. The
highest paying skills associated with this job are Spine Surgery and
Neurosurgeon.
