5-E (+1) Lesson Plan

Topic: ___Be Sugar Savy____30 minutes______ Grade: _5___


Emphasis (objective):

The students will be able to identify the amount of sugar on a product nutrition
label.
The students will compare different products, think critically, and collaborate with
a partner to solve problems.
The students will be able to engage effectively in partner and group discussion.
The students will convert from grams to teaspoons using multiple steps.

Standards & Benchmarks addressed:


Kansas 5th grade standards for health:
Standard 1, benchmark 1: The students will compare the amount of sugar in
specific snacks and drinks.
Standard 2, benchmark 1: The students will locate information on products and
recognize the validity of the information.
Common Core Standards for 5th grade ELA (Comprehension and Collaboration:
SL.5.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions, building on
others ideas and expressing their own clearly.
Common Core Standards for 5th grade Math (Measurement and Data):
5.MD.1: Convert among different-sized standard measurements units within a
given measurement system and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real
world problems.

Labels for students to identify

I. Engagement: The activities in this section capture the student's attention, stimulate
their thinking and help them access prior knowledge.

Discovery Education Video (cutting down on sugar) 2 minutes


Did you knowthe average person eats almost a quarter pound of added sugar a day;
which is about the amount of sugar in the vitamin water.
II. Exploration: In this section students are given time to think, plan, investigate, and
organize collected information

Product sort: in groups of 2 students will be given 8 different snacks and

drinks to order from most sugar to least sugar.


III. Explanation: Students are now involved in an analysis of their exploration. Their
understanding is clarified and modified because of reflective activities

Discussion questions:
Were you surprised by the order? Why?
Why is the sugar necessary?
What does the sugar do?
What does excess sugar lead to? (heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity)
What else can sugar be labeled as?
IVa. Elaboration: This section gives students the opportunity to expand and solidify their
understanding of the concept and/or apply it to a real world situation.

Reading nutrition labels to identify the amount of sugar. Students will work in
groups of 2 to find the amount of sugar in grams.
IVb. Extension: This section allows for differentiated instruction plansmodifications for
adaptive learners; added depth or breadth of concepts for gifted/talented.

Have students convert the grams of sugar in their product to teaspoons.

4 grams of sugar equals 1 teaspoon

V. Evaluation Assesses both learning and teaching and can use a wide variety of
informal and formal assessment strategies.

Students will work independently to match up products up to how many grams of sugar
they think they might have. This will help show understanding if the students are able to
recognize healthy food and drink choices. This evaluation will allow the students to draw
on previous knowledge/examples from earlier in the lesson to use the process of
elimination to find the correct answer.
