Project Proposal
What specific areas within the field will be investigated, researched,
and/or studied?
My internship is in the field of athletic training. I will be researching the
psychological aspects of severe injury on an athlete.
How will knowledge or ability in the field be acquired, developed,
and demonstrated through the year?
I will acquire information on the psychological effects of injuries
through secondary sources such as books, articles, and journals as well as
interviews. Through the use of these sources, I will compose a research
paper that integrates my studies. Then, I will conduct surveys on various
high school athletes who have been recently injured. These will then be
compiled, graphed, compared, and interpreted.

What will be the products and or outcomes of the internship?
The information including in my research paper will be disseminated to
athletic trainers, coaches, parents, and athletes in Howard County. This
research will be used to raise awareness of the psychological effects of
injuries have on athletes and how best to support the athlete with his/her
recovery.
What proven need will be addressed? What real problem will be
solved? What question will be researched?
What is the psychological effect of an injury on a high school athletes
recovery?
What is the intended audience for the project? Who, other than the
student, will learn or benefit as a result of the work? To whom will

the outcomes be communicated? For whom is the product or result

intended?
This project is intended to inform athletic trainers, coaches, parents,
and high school athletes of the psychological characteristics that an athlete
may be facing after an injury. Ideally, these people will use my research to
support the struggling athlete and assist in their recovery process.
Will the audience be local, state, or national?
The audience will be local, state, and national for my project because it is
important to raise awareness of this emotional struggle some athletes are
forced to overcome after a severe injury.
How will the product or outcomes be communicated or performed to
the selected audience? What will be the outlet vehicle?
My project will be communicated through articles, newsletters, blogs,
and other publications to middle and high schools in Howard County as well
as various athletic organizations around Howard County. My contact
information will be included in case there are any questions, comments, or
requests for further research.
What resources (human, print, material, financial) will be required
for the project?
My project will require various resources including personal interviews
with experts in the field. I will also use other information tools such as the
internet, electronic databases, and libraries.
Describe and special considerations/concerns for completing the
project.
To survey the athletes who have had an injury I will need to request
permission and be sensitive to their requests. I will also need to keep all
actual names out of my research paper so that their information stays
confidential. I will also need to get folders to organize my information.
