rigorous analysis, inspired ideas and brilliant execution.
A logo thats distinctive arouses interest; it provokes an
extended look. Its easy to comprehend, and unique

THE RIGHT LOGO IS A SHORT STORY


ABOUT A PRODUCT OR SERVICE.
The right logo is a short story about a product or service, characterised
by a certain form, style and theme. Together the three give meaning
to a logo, but its the theme that carries the greatest weight.
Powerful themes make great stories, and the richest source of powerful
themes are metaphors. The difficult task is finding the right metaphor to
create a powerful theme. The same holds true for logos.
It takes psychological insight and investigative skills to find a metaphor
that is both meaningful to the customer and communicates what the
product or service is and what it stands for.
A meaningful logo achieves two objectives: it identifies the essential
qualities of the product or service and identifies with the customer in
a simple, engaging and direct way.

The leaf-like form captures the concept of


seeing into the distance.
A beam of light forms a lighthouse, adding a
protective overtone and reinforcing seeing
into the distance.
By cropping top and bottom we bring focus on
the lighthouse with the beam of light pushing
beyond the boundaries.

AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE,
BUT NEVER SIMPLISTIC.
The right logo is always as simple as possible, but never simplistic.
It features something unexpected or unique without being
overdrawn. Simplicity underpins effective logo design.
Simplicity means scrapping all superfluous elements and
keeping whats important. Because every element in a logo is
a potential distraction and every additional detail is one more
thing to forget. In short, a simple logo is easier to remember.
Simplicity is paramount for many reasons, the most important
being the growing complexity of modern life. People are in
information overload! The simpler the logo, the more intuitive,
the more persuasive a logo becomes. Other reasons include
flexibility and functionality, which are covered in more detail later.

Simplify to add personality. This logo conveys a general


practice thats upbeat about keeping patients healthy.
Simplify creatively. This memorable example cleverly
conveys unique eyewear using two fingerprints.
Simplify multiple metaphors into one logo.

This logo is based on Zen painting, which transcends the


whims of fashion. It will always be strikingly beautiful, yet
strong and resonant.
The idea of putting the pieces back together to pave the
way to recovery is timeless, as is the execution of the idea.

The right logo lasts well beyond the fashion of


the momentand in the process becomes an
effective branding tool. The more things change
the more a customer depends on a consistent
logo to aid recognition.
Sustainability is the inherent ability of a logo
to have longevity in an environment that is
continuously changing. Sustainability is the
product of distinctiveness and meaningfulness.
Heavy reliance on special effects, design fads
and design clichs tend to reduce longevity.
They also reduce the development cost of a
logoa good example of short-term gain
for a long-term loss.

The right logo works across various mediums
and is able to be used in all kinds of applications.
It can also be extended to encompass new
products or services. Put simply, the right logo
adapts to change.
Form and colour have an influence on flexibility.
But of the two, form exerts more influence.
Simple forms offer greater flexibility than complex
forms because less is lost or altered during the
transfer between mediums.
The interplay between form and colour is another
factor. A logo that retains its form across electronic
and print media on dark and light backgrounds,
in black-and-white and colour is considered flexible.

This logo passes with flying colours (no pun indented).


Irrespective of colour and application the logo retains its integrity.

A logo worth its price works just as well when small as it
does when large.
Even though a custom font is used to make this logo unique,
it still remains legible.

The aspect ratio of a logo is the relationship between its height and
width. An aspect ratio of 1:1 or close to it is best. A logo that is too
vertical or horizontal quickly becomes illegible when reduced and
takes up too much space when enlarged.
A scalable logo retains its detail when reduced or enlarged. Here too
simplicity plays an important role. Fine details tend to get lost or altered
when a logo is reduced or enlarged; simplicity solves this problem.
Majority of logos have a textual element that literally describes
something. It doesnt matter how fancy or cool this element looks,
its useless if illegible. Making sure a logo is legible is common sense,
but common sense is not as common as you might think.
