7th Grade Science Sample Lesson Plan

*Adapted from a GaDOE collection of Unit Frameworks, Performance Tasks, examples of

Student Work, and Teacher Commentary

Grade Level
7th

Content Area(s)
Science

Instructional Plan
Traditionally, this 7th grade science teacher has done a Powerpoint presentation on
the cell, its specialized structures, and the functions of each structure, specifically the
cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, mitochondria, chloroplast, ribosomes, lysosomes,
Golgi body, and the endoplasmic reticulum. Students following along with the
presentation with a guided note sheet and then make flash cards for each structure in
order to better memorize them for the test. Additionally, students must create a 3D
model of the cell, labeling each part of the cell with its name and function.
This year, the teacher has asked that you assist her in incorporating more technology
into the lesson and make the unit more student-centered. She has between 24 - 30
students in each of her three classes. One of these classes has a small group of
gifted students and one is a co-taught inclusion class with a small group of students
with various specific learning disabilities. For the duration of the unit, she will have the
following technology available: her personal computer, projector, set of 15
laptops/Chromebooks, and 10 iPad Minis.
Content Standards
S7L2: Students will describe the structure and function of cells, tissues, organs,
and organ systems.
b. Relate cell structures (cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplasts,
mitochondria) to basic cell functions.
c. Explain that cells are organized into tissues, tissues into organs, organs into
systems, and systems into organisms

Summary
Students will understand the function of cellular structures and create analogies to
increase mastery of the standard. Students will explain why each cellular structure is
important for the cell to carry out its processes.

Essential Question(s)

Why is each part of the cell essential to survival? How can the relationship between
the structures and functions of cell organelles be explained?

Recommendations
Instead of the traditional powerpoint presentation, the teacher can import her presentation into
Peardeck and begin a live presentation session. Students will join using a code and can interact
during the lesson. This makes sure that all students are actively participating. See the following
video to see how it works.

Students can also go to the following site to get information, study guide questions, and take
quizzes on cells
http://www.shmoop.com/biology-cells/
Quivervision has an amazing app for use with the Ipad minis. Students could rotate through
three stations to be able to all use the app. The teacher would need to go to quivervision.com
to print out the two cell sheets for students to color before they can use the app. Once they
have colored the sheets, they will open the app and hold it over their sheet to watch it come to
life. The following video shows how the app works https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xirCqQFr6K8

Instead of having students make flashcards, they can go https://quizlet.com/172368/flashcards

and study for their test using these online flashcards.
