Subject:
Science/ Classification and Comparison
Opening Hook/Warm Up:
What do you know interesting about ants?
Do you think Ants have important jobs in their
home?
Do you have important jobs in your home similar
to that of Ants?
If you were an ant for a day which ant would you
be in the colony?

Grade Level:
Kindergarten
TEK:
Student will learn and compare some similar and
or some different traits ant possess to traits of
humans.
Objective: Student Friendly:
Student will investigate the behaviors/traits of
ants in the playground and compare their traits to
that of the lesson taught on ants.

Big Understanding:
Today we will take a closer look at the any colony to determine how similar or different ants live in
comparison to humans.
Summative Assessment Evidence:

Higher Level Questions to Incorporate: Higher Level Questions to Incorporate:
Why do you think it is important for ants to have different jobs in the colony?
Why every ant does not have their own colony like every student that lives in their own homes?
Instructional Strategies / Student Activities/ Grouping Patterns:
We would sit and listen to interesting facts about Ants
As a group we will discuss interesting things we learned about Ants
We would turn and talk to our shoulder buddy about whos life we would like to mimic in the Ant colony
Independently we would work on Fun Sheets about Ants to include: Drawing our vision of an Ant and its
colony/ Coloring an Ant page and Complete a counting sheet with Ants
Teacher Input/Modeling: IDO:
Discuss our image of our ants drawn; whether it was the queen, the worker, or the soldier and explain
why we chose that Ant in the colony to draw.
Guided Practice: WE DO:
Students will explain what they observation about Ants in the playground
Students will share something new they learned about Ants that they did not know from the lesson
CFU (Checking for understanding):
Students will explain what is the name of the place an Ant lives? (Colony)
How is the colony for Ants similar to something humans need to have? (It is their home)
How many categories of Ants are there and what are they? (Three; The Queen, soldier and worker)
Independent Practice: YOU DO (Individual students):
Provide Fun sheets to work independently on the topic Ants
Ending, Summary / Reflection:
Raise your hand and tell me one thing you learned interesting about Ants and why was it interesting to you?
Materials / Resources:
Fun sheets
Video
Color pencils or crayons
