Computer Networking: A Top-down Approach Featuring the Internet by Jim

Kurose and Keith Ross, Addison Wesley

Reference:
Grading Policy: Midterm (25 %), Final (25 %), HW ( 5 %), Quiz ( 10 %), Practice (25 %),
Class Conduct ( 5 %), Paper review (5 %)
Objective:
This course is intended for undergraduates, who have little or no background in
networking. It introduces the concepts clearly first. And the explanation of how the underlying
communication component works, fundamental of packet switching, basic principles of various
Internet protocols including Protocols such as IP, TCP, ICMP, ARP etc. will be covered. Finally,
it examines network applications. The coverage is quite broad. It includes a discussion of both
general principles and specific applications on client-server model, socket API, DNS, e-mail file
transfer, Web browsing. The course involves lecture, reading/discussion and homework. The
important part of this lecture is the Practice. It includes network programing on various
aspects of protocols especially TCP/IP using the practice environment KENS that has been
developed in School of Computing KAIST.
Course Policies:
Assignments: All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date due. Late submission
of assignments will be assessed a penalty of 20% per day. No exceptions are made.
Academic Dishonesty: Plagiarism and cheating are serious offenses and may be punished by
failure on exam or assignments; failure in course; and or expulsion from the University.
