QW-430 F-NUMBERS
QW-431 General
The following F-Number grouping of electrodes and
welding rods in table QW-432 is based essentially on their
usability characteristics, which fundamentally determine
the ability of welders to make satisfactory welds with a
given filler metal. This grouping is made to reduce the
number of welding procedure and performance qualifications,
where this can logically be done. The grouping does
not imply that base metals or filler metals within a group
may be indiscriminately substituted for a metal that was
used in the qualification test without consideration of the
compatibility of the base and filler metals from the standpoint
of metallurgical properties, postweld heat treatment
design and service requirements, and mechanical
properties.

ESW
Electroslag welding (ESW) is a highly
productive, single pass welding process
for thick (greater than 25 mm up to
about 300 mm) materials in a vertical or
close to vertical position. (ESW) is
similar to electrogas welding, but the
main difference is the arc starts in a
different location. An electric arc is
initially struck by wire that is fed into the
desired weld location and then flux is
added. Additional flux is added until the
molten slag, reaching the tip of the
electrode, extinguishes the arc. The
wire is then continually fed through a
consumable guide tube (can oscillate if
desired) into the surfaces of the metal
work pieces and the filler metal are then
melted using the electrical resistance of
the molten slag to cause coalescence.
