Connection this is unit 2/lesson 2 in the NY State K8 Social Studies Scope and Sequence and builds
on the essential question: if we live in the present, why should we care about the past?
Teach Part 1
-I will introduce the essential question for the unit: Whats the difference between a cause and an effect?
-I will ask if anyone has ever heard of this.
-I will explain that cause and effect have to do with events, or things happening.
-I will ask for definitions of each word and write relevant responses on the board.
-I will then write the definitions for cause (why an event happens) and effect (the event that happens
because of the cause)
-I will then give them an example: the boy gets a shot, he starts crying (show image) or your mom takes
away your playstation (cause), the effect is you crying, yelling, not speaking to you mom, read a book!
-Brain pop video https://jr.brainpop.com/readingandwriting/comprehension/causeandeffect/
-I will say we can you cause and effect in reading and writing as well as social studies.
-I will ask who remembers the Dutch mans name that discovered one of New Yorks rivers? I expect
some students to remember Henry Hudson.
-I will say that HH sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to find a trade route to Asia (cause). The effect was,
he discovered the Hudson River.
-I will give one more example: the NY state thruway (cause). Effect= new road, faster travel, loss of
homes and buildings
-I will ask for a couple of examples from the class.
-I will say that cause and effects are all around us. Theres the new subway, the new building on the
corner, Zestys pizza
-I will ask if there are any questions.

Part 2 students will work in groups and/or independently at their desks.

-I will explain the task to the students: task 1/group 1 is a cause and effect matching. Task 2/group 2
cause and effect matching and list your own. Task 3/group 3 complete 3 prompts and list your own
cause and effects
Active Involvement (Guided Engagement) Students will also answer questions throughout the lesson.
Link (Independent Engagement) - Students will practice linking causes and effects and create tcharts.
