GOODBYE SUMMER,

Introduction

HELLO SCHOOL!

Hello Learners, welcome to Module 1! Summer vacation is officially over

and now is the time to learn new things, collect another pile of experiences
and meet new friends!
Meanwhile, have you ever wondered how words are formed? The
development of a language is a dynamic process and English has been
hospitable to new words that are continuously added to its storehouse. At
least half of the words that we use at present are derived from Greek and
Latin roots and some were just developed through series of forms and putting
simple words together.
In this module, you will be able to:

*identify affixes;
*decode word meaning through prefixes;
*and differentiate a prefix, from a suffix.
I am hoping that you will be learning a lot of significant things from this
module most especially through answering varied activities especially
prepared for you.
Enjoy each page!

Before we proceed with the

lesson, let's first answer the
activity prepared below.

LESSON
PROPER

AFFIXES
Hello learner, how is it going? After answering the previous
activity, I guess it's time to discover what Affixes are. Read on and
learn.Take note of the key terms and their meanings as well as
the examples given.

AFFIXES

are beginnings and

endings attached to
words.

Polysyllabic words may be composed of three different word parts:

the prefix, the root, and the suffix.

Three kinds of word-part combinations:

1. prefix + root
2. root + suffix
3. prefix + root + suffix
The root is the main part of a word to which affixes are added either
at the beginning or end.
A syllable or syllables added at the beginning of the root is the part of
the word called prefix.
re + phrase = rephrase
A syllable or syllables added at the end of the root is the part of the
word called suffix.
phrase + ing = phrasing

DISCUSSION

AFFIXES
It is easier to determine the meaning of an unfamiliar word by
knowing the meanings of roots, prefixes and suffixes.
For example, the folowing prefixes mean 'not'.

dis-

in-

im-

un-

ir-

il-

Look at the following examples:

dis + honest = dishonest

un+ pleasant = unpleasant

in + visible = invisible
irresponsible

ir + responsible =

im + moral = immoral

il + legal= illegal

Re

m
me

:
ber

The root is the main part of the word.

Prefix is adding syllable or syllables at the beginning of the word.
Suffix is adding syllable or syllables after the word.

How was it? Do you already understand the concept? Are you ready to
take all the challenges that I have prepared?
Turn to the next page and let's try to check what have you learned!

POST- TEST

EVALUATE

AFFIXES
Hello Learner! How do you find the previous activities? Were you able to
answer them all? Could you master the concept already? If yes, this is the
final stage of your challenge, make sure you answer everything.

Instructions:
As you read this paragraph, determine the words that have affixes.
List them down on the table below and classify each whether it has
prefix or suffix.
The Garbage Problem
Improper garbage disposal can cause contamination of subterranean water
sources. Relocating garbage dumps doesnt necessarily solve this incredibly
unhealthful problem. Laws preceding the discovery of this problem were
predictably relaxed in terms of garbage disposal. Since the discovery, authorities
have proceeded to toughen these laws and have injected funds into reevaluating
ongoing practices. Interjection of environmental organizations has helped to
convince an incredulous public of the depth of the problem and the need to
recycle. Some garbage dumps have receded in size, but most have increased as
the
unbelievable amount of garbage produced continues to multiply unnecessarily.
