This task gives the procedure to identify the kind of damage present in composite parts.

Instructions for Damage Determination (Figure 1)


A.

Verify the kind of damage present on the part under analysis.

B.

Check the panels next to the damage for any sign of water, oil, fuel, dirt, or any other foreign
material.

C.

Check the part for the delamination around the damage.

D.

Visually examine the part for the extent of damage.

TYPES OF DAMAGE

A DAMAGED AREA OF ANY SIZE WHICH


RESULTS IN A CROSSSECTIONAL
AREA CHANGE. IT IS USUALLY CAUSED
BY CONTACT WITH A RELATIVELY
SHARP OBJECTS WHICH PRODUCES
A CONTINUOUS, SHARP OR SMOOTH
CHANNEL LIKE GROOVE IN THE
MATERIAL

A DAMAGED AREA OF ANY SIZE


WHICH CAUSES A CHANGE
IN CROSSSECTIONAL AREA BECAUSE
OF SCUFFING, RUBBING, SCRAPING
OR OTHER SURFACE EROSION.
IT IS USUALLY ROUGH AND IRREGULAR

ABRASION

GOUGE

A LINE OF DAMAGE OF ANY DEPTH AND


LENGTH IN THE MATERIAL, WHICH
CAUSES A CROSSSECTIONAL AREA
CHANGE. IT IS USUALLY CAUSED
BY SHARP OBJECT.

A LOCAL REMOVAL OF MATERIAL


DUE TO A KNOCK ETC, AT THE
EDGE OF MEMBER OR SKIN
