I

I
have
recently
completed
my
Master
of
Teaching
(MT)
degree
as
a
Primary/Junior
teacher
at
the
University
of
Torontos
Ontario
Institute
for
Studies
in
Education
(OISE).
This
academically
demanding
two
year
program
combined
initial
teacher
education
with
graduate
level
research
and
analysis.
As
well
as
studying
lesson
and
unit
design,
classroom
management
and
the
pedagogy
of
core
curriculum
subjects,
substantial
time
was
devoted
to
the
analysis
of
a
range
of
subjects
relevant
to
the
21st
century
classroom.
These
additional
courses
involved
in-
depth
examinations
of,
among
other
things,
integrating
technology
in
learning
environments,
instruction
of
students
with
special
educational
needs
and
anti-discriminatory
education.
Throughout
the
course
I
have
developed
and
honed
my
ability
to
combine
and
synthesize
scholarly
thought
from
a
range
of
disciplines
in
order
to
explore
these
contemporary
issues
and
plan
strategies
to
address
them
in
my
future
practice.
Over
the
course
of
the
MT
program
I
completed
a
90
page
research
paper
detailing
my
qualitative
investigation
into
the
celebration
of
students
on
the
autism
spectrum
within
classrooms.
I
conducted
a
series
of
interviews
with
experienced
teachers
of
autistic
students,
discussing
the
success
of
their
strategies
and
their
guiding
philosophical
approaches
to
this
work.
This
paper
complements
my
undergraduate
dissertation
which
looked
at
face-processing
in
autistic
individuals.
Completing
these
studies
has
helped
me
strengthen
my
skills
as
both
a
teacher
and
a
researcher
in
the
specific
field
of
autism
intervention.
Prior
to
commencing
the
MT
program
I
worked
at
several
special
needs
schools
and
institutions
in
Montreal
with
young
people
diagnosed
with
a
wide
range
of
physical,
intellectual
and
learning
disabilities,
developmental
delays
as
well
as
those
with
behavioural
and
emotional
challenges.
Through
these
roles,
as
well
as
my
four
practice-teaching
placements
within
the
MT
program,
I
have
gained
several
thousand
hours
of
hands-on
experience
working
with
children
and
young
people.
This
allows
me
to
effectively
apply
my
theoretical
background
to
multiple
real-life
educational
scenarios
and
reflect
deeply
on
the
outcomes.
I
have
dedicated
my
entire
career
to
improving
my
practice
as
an
educator,
particularly
of
students
with
special
needs.
The
decisions
I
have
made
along
the
way
have
been
made
in
response
to
my
evolving
personal
philosophy
of
education.
At
the
core
of
my
practice
is
a
belief
that
each
and
every
student
should
given
the
means
to
define
and
pursue
their
own
vision
of
happiness
by
identifying
and
enhancing
the
set
of
life-skills
most
relevant
to
their
interests
and
strengths.
