Final Reflection: Social Justice

Throughout the program, we were required to have one social justice each semester.
Prior to addressing social justice in Professor Wrightsmans class, I just saw this as an
opportunity to give back to the community for those in need. Although that may be a component
of social justice, there was so much for me to learn. I participated in several different
organizations that raised awareness for specific populations in need. First semester I participated
in Duck Derby which helped raise funds for the Positively Kids Foundation. Second semester,
several of my classmates and I helped take down Christmas decorations at the St. Jude Ranch.
This was a wonderful facility who help transform lives of abused and at-risk youth and families
by creating a second chance. Third semester, my friends and I helped create wooden toy cars for
children in need of a smile. Fourth semester, I handed out food at one of the stations for the
Multiple Sclerosis bike ride event. Fifth semester, I helped distribute meals for the homeless for
the Salvation Army. Sixth semester, I participated in Clean the World by separating shampoo
bottles based on how full they were.
It truly is amazing to see the amount of social justice opportunities I completed
throughout a rigorous occupational therapy program. I feel like I have no excuse but to continue
participating for organizations who help the community. Overall, I feel like Ive witness and
learned more about social justice. Social justice requires the awareness of individuals rights and
privileges. Everyone deserves equal opportunities despite their disability, race, gender,
socioeconomic status, and so on. Professor Wrightsmans social justice class helped me better
understand marginalized populations. I had the opportunity to interview a friend who had the
unfortunate childhood of having drug addicted parents. It was a wonderful opportunity to better

understand one marginalized population especially coming from a friend who rarely gets asked
these questions.
Through my experiences in social justice, I aspire to provide the best treatment without
holding any perceived judgements. I am motivated to advocate for my patients rights and
continue to participated in various community events after graduating from Touro University
Nevada.
