CLASS

The completion of homework will help to improve your

test scores. If you dont attend class regularly and
complete homework, then dont expect to see your
test scores improve.
Homework will include subjects covered in class, as
well as, subjects taught in 40A as review.
Expect a little more homework in this class than you
had in Math 40A
Quizzes will cover material taught in class
If you need assistance with your homework, please
either:

Stay after class and ask for help

Go to the lab during regular lab hours

Math Myths
3

Youre born with a math gene, either you get it or

you dont.
Math is for males, females never get math!
Its hopeless and much too hard for average
people.
If the logical side of your brain isnt your
strength, youll never do well in math.
Math is a cultural thing, my culture never got it!
Theres only one right way to do math.

Are goals important?

C. S. Lewis (1898-1963) was a novelist (wrote The Chronicles of Narnia), poet,

academic, and literary critic.

Question: What is your math goal?

How do you plan to accomplish
this goal? What do you expect to
get out of this class?

You have 12 minutes to write 2 paragraphs.

Be thoughtful in your writing.

Introducing Sign Numbersy

ular

Signed Numbers: the set of all positive and negative

numbers.

Positive Numbers: are greater than zero and are preceded by

a positive sign (+) or no sign at all. Example: 2 or +2

Negative Numbers: are less than zero and are always

preceded by a negative sign (-). Example: -1, - , -.05

Zero (0) separates positive numbers from negative numbers.

Zero is neither positive nor negative and is always written as
0.
Where are signed numbers used?
15 below zero is written as -15
A dollar drop in a stock market price is written

35 feet below sea level is written as -35 feet

A negative $10 balance in a checkbook is written -

Remember the alligator always eats the

bigger number.

The Number Line

Signed numbers can be pictured on a

number line. The value of numbers
increases as you move from left to right.
Positive numbers are written to the right
of 0 and are always greater than 0.
Negative numbers are written to the left
of 0 and
are always less than 0.

10

Complete your own Number Line or add these

numbers to your Number Line Index Card
Draw a number line on an index card and label the following
numbers:

5, -4, , 2, -3 , 6.5, -7.75, 8, -2

In the next 3 slides you will have to

decide what numbers are <, or >.
Think about the number line when
answering the questions.

Absolute Value
15

Absolute value is the distance from

zero on a number line. Since absolute
value measures distance travelled it is
ALWAYS positive. The symbol for
absolute value is | |.

When comparing or ordering integers, if an

integer is within the absolute value sign then take
the absolute value first before comparing or
ordering.

When comparing numbers use the following signs: <, >, =

Rules for multiplying signed

numbers

If the signs of the numbers are alike,

multiply the numbers and give the
product a positive sign.
positive x positive = positive
negative x negative = positive
If the signs of the numbers are different,
multiply the numbers and give the
product a negative sign.
