ACTIVITY UNIT 3
Grade: 11 Physics
Date: ___________
Name: ___________
Once an object is set into motion, we can measure how fast it travels and calculate its speed. We
can also calculate the velocity, which describes the speed and direction of a moving object. If the
moving object travels at the same, unchanging velocity, it has a constant speed. A change in
velocity (speeding up) causes acceleration.

Activity 1: A curious coin:
What You Need:
A cup
An index card
A coin
Directions:
1. Set the plastic cup on a flat surface and place the index card on top.
2. Position the quarter in the center of the index card.
3. Use your fingers to flick the card so it shoots off the cup.
Now explain:
1- What happened to the quarter when the card slid out from underneath it?

2- Newtons first law: (The big misconception)
Answer:
Anna is correct.
Noah Formula may know his formulas but he does not know (or does not believe)
Newton's laws. If the forces acting on an object are balanced and the object is in motion,
then it will continue in motion with the same velocity. Remember: forces do not cause
motion. Forces cause accelerations.
