ANTARARTHA OF RAMAYANA

Mokshananda (the bliss of liberation) is the city of Ayodhya. The ruler of that city was Para
Brahma himself in the form of Dasaratha. He had three wives, Ichha Sakti (the power of
volition), Kriya Sakti (power of action). From the ocean-like womb of Kausalya (Jnana Sakti)
was born Sri Ramachandra, reveler in the bliss of the Self (Atmarama).
In his boyhood (unmanifested state-Avyakta), forgetting his real nature he deluded himself to
be the ignorant Jiva. In his youth he was attached to the world of body and senses but realized his
Self through Sravana (listening), Manana (reflection) and Nidhi Dhvasa (meditation) as
instructed by Vasishtha. Accompanied by Lakshmana (detachment-Vairagya), he followed
Viswamitra (reflection-Manana) and crossed the mountains (five great sins) and killed Tataka
(power of illusion) with the arrow of deekshajnana (initiation and knowledge); drowned
Maricha (desire) in the sea and liberated Ahalya (good conduct) from curse and entered Mithila
(solitude) and met Janaka (peace) and shattering the bow of Siva (jealousy), married Sita
(bliss), vanquished Parasurama (vanity), entered Ayodhya (release-mukti); on the eve of his
coronation (renunciation of the ego), a hurdle (infirmity) was presented by Kaikeyi (Kriya
Sakti); he left Ayodhya (mukti) accompanied by Sita (bliss) and Lakshmana (detachment) and
crossed the river Sarayu (memory-chitta); entering the dense forest (hidden wealth) with Guha
(intellect), stayed in Chitrakoota (austerity); killed Viradha (ego) and Kakasura (reflection),
pierced ones eye (will) and bestowed another eye (nirvikalpa); took shelter under Agasthya
(fortitude) and with an arrow (courage) deformed Soorpanakha (lust); when Maricha (future
actions-agami karmas) tempted him, and Ravana (Rajas) assumed the guise of Sanyasi

(hypocracy) and carried away Sita (bliss), Sri Ramachandra (reveler in the bliss of the SelfAtmarama), not finding Sita (bliss), entered the forest (agitations) along with Lakshmana
detachment); bestowed salvation on Jatayu (discrimination), killed Kabandha (worry),
accepted the hospitality of Sabari (Happiness), took Hanuman (meditation), killed Vali (fear)
and received Sugriva (fearlessness) with affection; sent Hanuman (meditation) who crossed the
great ocean (attachment) and reached Lanka (greed), killed the rakshasas (evil tendencies) and
saw Sita (bliss), destroyed the garden Asoka (will), reduced to ashes Jambumalini (ignorance),
punished Akshaya (doubt), scorned Indrajit (perversion) and cut the rope (illusion) tired around
him, treated with contempt Ravana (rajas), lighted the great fire (silence) and burnt Lanka
(greed); crossed the great ocean (attachment) again, conveyed to Sri Ramachandra (Atmarama
reveller in the bliss of the Self) the news of having met Sita (bless); thereupon Sri
Ramachandra (Atmarama reveller in the bliss of the Self) started the march, shattered the
ocean (attachment), built the bridge (firmness), sheltered Vibhishana (righteousness) and was
bound by the Naga curse (extremes) and freed by Garuda (right thinking); killed
Kumbhakarna (tamas); when Lakshmana (detachment) was hit by an arrow (illusion) and
swooned, Hanuman (meditation) brought the Sanjeevini mountain (devotion) and liberated
Lakshmana (detachment); then Sri Ramachandra (Atmarama) killed Indrajit (perversion) with
the deluding arrows (sadhana), rooted out the principal forces (sanchita karmas i.e.
accumulated past actions) of Ravana (rajas), destroyed the rakshasas (evil tendencies) and
greeted the Vanara army (good tendencies); took in hand the bow (majesty), encountered
Ravana (rajas) and with an arrow (knowledge) shook the Amrita kalasa (pot of nectar the
ego), severed the ten heads (desire, anger etc.), received Sita (bliss) reaching Ayodhya (release
moksha) was crowned (renounced the ego) and himself became Dasaratha (Brahman) and

regained the kingdom of Brahman realization; protecting the subjects (the infinite jivas),
performed Asvamedha (horse sacrifice conquest of all the sense organs) and handed over
the kingdom of Ananda (bliss) to Lava (jnana) and Kusa (vijnana-intuition), and performed
their coronation (renunciation of ego) and along with the infinite beings of which he was the
Antaratma (inner-self) reached his abode through Sarayu river (remembrance).
