Newtons Laws of Motion

1st Law: An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted
on by an unbalanced force. An object in motion continues in
motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless
acted upon by an unbalanced force.
2nd Law: Acceleration is produced when a force acts on a
mass. The greater the mass (of the object being accelerated)
the greater the amount of force needed (to accelerate the
object).
3rd Law: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Group 1
Step 1

The first step to the Rube Goldberg Machine is a Newtons Cradle that
pushes a ball into a cup held by a pulley. The weight makes the pulley fall,
pulling up a seesaw. The seesaw releases a ball, which hits dominoes. This
step follows Newtons First Law of Motion, which means an object at rest will
remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force. An object in motion
continues in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted
upon by an unbalanced force.

Group 2
Step 1

The dominos from group one leads to our inclined plain and
hits our golf ball with force into motion, which leads to
the next step. (Newton's First Law)

group 2
Step 2

The golf ball rolls down the inclined plane and hits a Jenga
block that triggers a falling cobra popsicle stick pattern.

group 2
Step 3

All the popsicle sticks fall with the pattern (gravity) and
at the end, the Jenga blocks that are holding up the stick
pattern, fall down onto a lever and the next groups step
starts.

group 3
Step 1

In this step, we have a lever with a golf ball on it so

that when the Jenga blocks fall on top of one side of the
lever, the ball rolls of and hits the dominos. This happens
because of Newtons First Law of Motion. An object at rest
will remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
An object in motion continues in motion with the same speed
and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced
force.

Group 3
Step 2

After Step 1, the domino trail causes a chain reaction

that leads up the Jenga stair steps to group number 3. This
is Newtons first law of motion. An object at rest will
remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force. An
object in motion continues in motion with the same speed and
in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced
force.

Group 4
Step 1

In this step, the dominos from Group 3-Step 2, will go up

stair steps (made by Jenga blocks) and at the top, they will
tip a golf ball into motion. This happens because of Newton
s First Law of Motion.

Step 2

The golf ball rolls onto an inclined plane. It continues to

increase speed as it rolls down the ramp. This is because
the force of gravity is pulling on the object. The heavier
the object is, the faster it will roll. This is stated by
Newtons Second Law of Motion.

Step 3

The accelerating golf ball reaches the end of the ramp,

smashing into a tower of Jenga blocks, with the bottom one
tried to a string that leads up to a pulley. The golf ball
stops because of Newtons First Law of Motion. This is also
the cause of the extra Jenga blocks (that were added for
weight) move off the bottom one that activates the pulley.

Step 4

The pulley has the small Jenga block on one end and a bigger block on the
other end that has a tack hot glued to the bottom. The bigger block goes down
(because it has more mass) while the Jenga block goes up (because it has less
mass). This is an example of Newtons First Law of Motion. The force of
gravitational pull bring the larger Jenga block down. When the bigger block
falls and the tack hits the balloon that was placed under in, thereby popping
the balloon.
