My name is Melanie Featherstone. I am a Donor Recruitment Account Manager for the American Red Cross
Blood Services in the Lewis & Clark Region.
I am writing this letter of recommendation in support of Miss Rachel Medina, who was a valued Leaders Save
Lives blood drive coordinator for the American Red Cross. In our busy lives, nothing is more valuable than time.
Rachel chose to volunteer her time in aiding the community by saving lives. We value the blood drive she held,
not only because she exhibited initiative ahead of her peers, but also because she aided the 40 hospitals we serve
here in Utah.
Rachel volunteered over 25 hours executing her American Red Cross Leaders Save Lives blood drive on Monday,
January 04, 2016. Under Rachels leadership, the Blood Drive collected 20 units of blood, 13 were first time
donors, which was 65% of her donor base! It is a difficult task to have that high amount of your donor base be
first time donors. Her drive saved 60 lives! This exhibited great interpersonal and educational skills to obtain
those individuals. She also brought leadership skills both innate and learned. Some of which include:

Honoring her commitment as a Leader Save Lives blood drive coordinator & a member of her
community.
Exhibited quality work ethic & interpersonal skills
o Organized recruitment days, ensuring appointments were aligned with the American Red Cross
Schedule, not allowing double booked appointments.
o Ensured a full appointment schedule, so the she would obtain goal.
o Structured Volunteers during the day of the drive, so registration remained under control and
the donors felt valued.
Demonstrated sincere appreciation to her volunteers and donors.
Acquired donated food and beverages for the hospitality table.
Treated donors kindly and sensitively, especially our first time donors
Desired a real challenge for the blood drive. She chose to hold her blood drive event on one of the most
difficult days of the year to collect, the Monday after New Years Day. She had full appointment schedule
and full participation. All of her donors presented that day and not only was the drive successful, it also
surpassed expectations.
Listened and Managed instructions
o Expressed clearly to the recruited donors about how to prepare for their donation.
o Worked well with the American Red Cross Staff day of the blood drive following their set-up
requirements, donor processing, and any other unforeseen needs.
o Staff reported back that Rachel was organized, prepared and were impressed with her positive
attitude.
o Jasmine Lovelace the staff member in charge of the drive stated, I have worked with a lot of
high school students and she stands out. She truly is about the Red Cross Mission and our
patients. She gets it.

The American Red Cross was certainly fortunate to have worked with her. I myself, felt privileged to work with
Rachel. I have been with the American Red Cross (8) years now and she is one of the most dedicated students I
have worked with. She will exhibit and uphold your highest qualities and core values to everyone she comes in
contact with, just as she did with the American Red Cross.
