My eighth week at Irmo was probably the best as far as my individual growth as a teacher. I don't want my classroom to be about memorization. Instead, I like to keep things as conceptual as possible and meaningful to the student's everyday lives.

Week 7 : My eighth week at Irmo was probably the best as far as my individual growth as a teacher. I now have developed a really good relationship with all of my students and understand the best ways to teach and interact with the different groups. For the most part, my kids really love me and what I bring to the classroom. There are a few kids that Im still working on and haven't reached in the way that I want to yet. But that comes with time and I have all the confidence in the world in my ability to do so. I probably feel more comfortable now in the classroom and running the show more than I ever have. The only thing that I have to keep reminding myself is that some of the old ways that the old teachers teach dont match my teaching philosophy. I like to get as interactive as possible with my students and my lessons. Of course, this requires a great deal of planning ahead of time so that the students still stay on track with the information and the unit. The problem that I am seeing is that some teachers take so much time doing other things that they cannot plan lessons that are effective for the students and instead, they revert back to bad tactics like worksheets and vocabulary. In my opinion, this is giving the students the content in the worst way possible. I dont want my classroom to be about memorization. Instead, I like to keep things as conceptual as possible and meaningful to the students everyday lives. Thats how I reach them on a personal level, I make the lesson mean something to them and earn their respect and attention in the process. The only thing I am really struggling with is time management when it comes to planning and pacing. Part of the problem is my coaching teacher was a good bit behind before I came into the class and it is ultimately affecting the overall process in my own class in a negative way. These are just things that I will have to learn to persevere through and learn to avoid in the future when I am in my own classroom. Overall, I am still excited and as motivated as ever. I just have a new motivation, to not turn into a teacher who ultimately is not happy with the job and disconnected from the students.
