MONTAGE
Description:

Four separate pictures used to create a montage with pixel blending.

Programs Used:
Adobe Photoshop

Date:

February 12, 2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 14
Jason Stucki

Objectives:

Unify a layout with a consistent theme and spiritual message

Use good rules of typography
Blend two or more images together gradually using masks

Process:

I first decided on a theme of prayer. I found two pictures to use, one for
the child and one for Christ. I decided on a monochromatic gold color
scheme to give it a peaceful appeal. I used the light gold shade as a
background and placed both pictures in the file in Photoshop. Using a
mask, I blended the pixels of the pictures with the background and each
other. I decided to add in some cloud pictures into the corners to give it
a feeling of heaven. I added a color tint of the light gold shade to each
cloud picture and again made a mask to blend the images. To finish, I
added some text. I made the main words large and dark gold. I added
an outer glow to the text to help it stand out against the clouds and also
give it a heavenly glowing feeling. The rest of the text is smaller and lighter
gold. I aligned them to corners to create a flow throughout the piece.

EVENT AD
Description:

A full-bleed event ad promoting a fundraiser.

Programs Used:

Microsoft Word, Scanner software

Date:

January 30, 2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 14
Jason Stucki

Objectives:

Learn to use only Word design features

Find, scan and import a high-quality image
Comprehend image sizing

Process:

I scanned the image of the apple and inserted it into a Microsoft Word
document. I removed the background of the image, enhanced the
colors with an image effect to add more contrast, and added a shadow
behind the image to make it stand out. I used text boxes to add the
words, and changed the background color of two text boxes to create
the colored boxes. I used red and green colors for the text boxes and
words to match the colors from the apple and unify the ad. I finished by
exporting the ad to a PDF and converting it to a jpeg using PDF2JPG.net.

PHOTO DESIGN
Description:

A full bleed photodesign poster.

Programs Used:

Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

Date:

February 6, 2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 14
Jason Stucki

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills

Use colors from the image to create a color scheme
Apply effective image editing skills

Process:

I used a Nikon D3100 camera to capture this picture of a child reaching.

I used natural lighting for the original picture by opening windows in
the house to let more light in. I then edited the image in Photoshop by
adjusting the levels, vibrance, saturation, sharpness, and color balance.
I also created a mask layer over the childs face to decrease the effects
that the previous editing steps had created, and give the face a more
natural color. I used a clipping mask on the image to get it to fit how
I wanted. I chose the yellow and orange color from the oranges and
lemons and added in a contrasting indigo color to create swatches in
Photoshop. Using these swatches I added a background layer color, as
well as the decorative stripes and boxes. I added in text with contrasting
typefaces to highlight the main words.

BROCHURE
Description:

A double-sided (duplex) brochure with an original logo.

Programs Used:

Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign

Date:

March 26, 2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 14
Jason Stucki

Objectives:

Create and align a two-sided, folded document

Learn how to wrap text around a clipped image
Use paragraph styles in InDesign

Process:

I used the pen tool in Illustrator to create the logo and used an analogous
color scheme to match the colors of the ocean. Then to incorporate
my logo into the design, I created a gate fold on the brochure with a
section in the middle cut out to create the center shape of the logo. Using
InDesign I created a layout using the same analogous color scheme from
the logo. I used the frame tool and text tool to create boxes for my layout
and placed the content inside. I used Photoshop to enhance most of the
pictures by adjusting the levels, vibrance and color selection. I then used
the selection tool to give the pictures a blended edge and placed those
pictures in InDesign. I also used the text wrapping feature to wrap the
review text around the clipped images on the back of the brochure.

LOGOS
Description:

I used Adobe Illustrator to create three variations of a logo for a business.

Programs Used:
Adobe Illustrator

Date:

February 20, 2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 14
Jason Stucki

Objectives:

Use only the Illustrator tools to create your logo

Refine the logo with variations for color

Process:

I started by sketching out all of my ideas. From those I created five

different logos in Adobe Illustrator. This gave me a chance to see how my
top five looked digitally compared to what I had drawn by hand. I chose
this tooth logo because I felt it best portrayed the company and had
a great color scheme. To create the tooth I used the pen tool to draw
strokes. I used the stroke options to adjust the weight and profile of the
stroke, giving it a pointed look at the ends. I then fine tuned the image by
making the tooth larger which created more white space for the business
name. I then increased the leading between the words to make them feel
more spread out and centered in the tooth. With my final image on top,
I created a grayscale version in the middle, and a white on color version
on the bottom using the dark blue as my background.

FLIER
Description:

Grayscale promotional flier for Vouants Graduate Conference.

Programs Used:
Adobe InDesign

Date:

January 23, 2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 14
Jason Stucki

Objectives:

Resize an image keeping its proportion

Layout text without hyphens or widows
Apply design principles and use appropriate typography

Process:

First I sketched out some possible layouts for the flier. I then looked through
the logo options and image options to help evaluate which sketch had
the most potential. I chose the sketch with the repeating circles because
I felt I could tie in the logo well and it gave some interesting repetition
to the piece. I used InDesign to create the picture mask and layout the
rest of the pieces. I drew three circles and changed the transparency
amount to create the different colors of grayscale circles. I added bold
text to some words to make those stand out due to the contrast. I made
graduate the largest word on the page because graduates are my
audience, and I wanted to grab their attention.

WEB PAGE:
REDESIGN
Description:

A resdesign of an existing web page. A new logo and color scheme were
also created as part of the web page redesign.

Programs Used:

Adobe Illustrator, NetBeans IDE

Date:

March 31, 2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 14
Jason Stucki

Objectives:

Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and CSS

Create a new logo based off of customer input
Apply rules of design to enhance the look of the web page

Process:

I viewed the original web page in its entirety and familiarized myself
with the code. The customers favorite color is purple so I used that as
a starting point for my color scheme. I created the logo using the type
tool in Adobe Illustrator and give it a tetradic color scheme. I then used
those colors to create the web page. I opened NetBeans to edit the HTML
and CSS code. Very little HTML was changed, but a lot of the CSS was
changed. I changed the background color to violet as well as both the
navigation bar and the footer bar. I then added a gold border to the top
bar and a teal border to the footer bar to make the boxes match the text
in the logo. I used purple for the body color to make it legible, teal for the
header colors, and gold as a hover color as if the user is highlighting the
text as they hover over it.

WEB PAGE:
CREATION
Description:

A new web page created and designed to display a logo and the
process of its creation.

Programs Used:

Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, NetBeans IDE

Date:

March 12, 2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 14
Jason Stucki

Objectives:

Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and CSS

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png file
Identify hex colors to match logo using Photoshop color Picker

Process:

I opened the logo in Adobe Photoshop and used the color dropper to
select the colors used in the logo and find their hexadecimal color code.
I used these colors for my web page color scheme. I used NetBeans IDE
to edit my CSS and HTML for this project. I first changed the text color to
the dark blue color. Then I changed the h2 color to indigo to match the
text color from the logo. With those colors used, I liked the teal for the h1
color with white for the text to make it more legible. I then changed the
background color to dark blue to contrast the teal header and white
body. I changed the fonts to Book Antiqua and Tahoma to give the text
contrast as well. I finished it up by changing the padding and margins on
the page to create the right amount of white space around the elements.

STATIONARY
Description:

I created a new business logo for a company and used it to create

stationary and a business card.

Programs Used:

Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign

Date:

February 27, 2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 14
Jason Stucki

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company image

Use a new logo to design consistent layouts through projects
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and plenty of white space

Process:

I created the new logo using Illustrator. I used the pen tool to create one
half of the book shape. Then I duplicated that shape and flipped it to
look like the other half of the book. I then added an o on each page
and the rest of the text around it to bring that book image into the logo. I
wanted the KD to stand out the most so I made it bigger than the rest of
the logo. From there I used InDesign to layout the stationary and business
card. I placed the logo in the top left and the information in the right
corner. Then I copied the book image, changed the color and opacity
and used it for a watermark on the stationary.

BUSINESS CARD
Description:

I created a new business logo for a company and used it to create

stationary and a business card.

Programs Used:

Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign

Date:

February 27, 2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 14
Jason Stucki

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company image

Use a new logo to design consistent layouts through projects
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy

Process:

I created a new logo using Illustrator. I used the pen tool to create half
of the book shape. Then I duplicated that shape and flipped it to look
like the other half of the book. I then added an o on each page and
the rest of the text around it to bring that book image into the logo. I
wanted the KD to stand out the most so I made it bigger than the rest of
the logo. From there I used InDesign to layout the stationary and business
card. I created two green squares for the card space. I used the logo
on the front of the card, and again copied the book image onto the
back. I wanted the information to look like it was part of the book so it
was included on one page of the book, and the KD from the logo was
included on the second page.
