Objective: I can collect data and make a tally chart.
Sub- objectives: Students will review what a tally chart is. Students will
review what a survey is and how you conduct a survey. Students will review
what data is in a graph. Students will understand that a tally chart, survey,
and data are all used together and are connected.
Activity: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1- Different activity for each number.

CC.2.MD.1 Measure the length of am object by selecting and using appropriate tools
such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
Objective: I can measure the lengths of objects to the nearest inch.
Sub- objectives: Students will review how to use a ruler using the inches side.
Students will review by looking at their class rulers and their paper rulers made in class
on Monday, 2/1. They will say tell how many inches there are on a ruler. Students will
understand that inches is one of the most common ways to measure lengths.
Activity: Sports Galore; Students act out a certain sport or stance for 10- 15 seconds.
Kind of like charades.

CC.2.MD.2 Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different lengths
of the two measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the
unit chosen.
Objective: I can measure objects in inches and in feet.

Sub- objectives: Students will review inches and that it is a unit of measurement.
Students will looks at a ruler to determine how many inches are in a foot. Students will
understand that 12 inches are in 1 foot in order to understand measuring objects in feet
and inches.
Activity: Go Noodle physical activity; Zumba dance for 4 minutes to get students
physically active and moving in between content areas.
Narrative
The curriculum map comes from the Cave Creek School District
website and is based off of what the students are currently learning. I am in
a second grade classroom at Desert Sun Academy in Scottsdale, AZ.
Mini Lesson One
Healthy environment
The first mini lesson listed is one that was added into a math lesson.
The activity gets student out of their seats and moving. For each number
there is a new exercise for the students to do. By having them get out of
their seats and moving, students are getting a boost of energy to continue
their learning. Physical activities in the classroom periodically get students
refreshed and clears their brain.
To incorporate talking about a healthy environment, the math lesson
could be based on healthy environments. The standard is based on bar
graphs and graphing so a healthy environment is easily able to be
incorporated. When practicing graphing, students categories on the graph

could be parts to a healthy environment or things that make an environment


healthy.
Mini Lesson Two
Sleep
The second mini lesson was an activity about sports and doing
different movements. This activity is called sports galore. In the activity,
students are told to do a specific movement such as dunking a basketball.
For 10- 15 seconds, students are to act out and pretend they are dunking a
basketball. Doing different movements for 5 minutes gets students up and
moving. Asking them to step away from school content, they are giving
themselves a break. Breaks throughout the day are so important in all age
groups in order to get the best from them during subject areas.
This lesson was on measuring the lengths of objects using a ruler,
meter stick, and ruler. Sleep could be incorporated into this by talking about
lengths of time and objects. Since the students learned about time prior to
measuring, the two could be incorporated together by talking about sleep
lengths in time and lengths of objects related to sleeping. Another way sleep
could be incorporated is review sleeping length in time then talking about
lengths of measurement and measuring items such as bed which are related
to sleep and the current standard.
Mini Lesson Three
Academic Performance

The third mini lesson is about academic performance. The physical


activity comes from Go Noodle where they do a Zumba dance. This activity
gets students out of their seats and moving. Allows students to take a break
and then be able to refocus on the content being taught.
The lesson was a math lesson about measuring an object twice and
describing how it related to the unit of measurement chosen. This is asking
students to think about the size of each unit of measurement and choose
which one is the most appropriate. This is a perfect lesson to talk and
educated on academic performance. Students can learn about academic
performance before and throughout the lesson. Teacher can begin by talking
about what students ate for their breakfast that morning, ask students to
share, and discuss some positive/ negative effects of the breakfast. By
talking about what students ate that morning, teacher is able to relate it to
them directly and talk about how and why the foods they ate for breakfast is
going to positively or negatively affect them throughout the day. At the midpoint of the lesson, teacher could pause and ask students how they feel
about their learning thus far. Ask if they feel tired or have lots of energy to
learn, etc. Say that because of what they ate then they may feel one way or
another.
