It was an exciting time. Mark Millar had been doing great things with Adam and Andy Kubert on Ultimate X-Men. | remember poring over the first three issues of that-- put together in one comic for easy catch-up--and feeling it grip me by the short hairs, without fully understanding why. Something about the energy of it--it felt new. Now. Different. Meanwhile, Bryan Hitch had done his usual incredible job on The Authority, working with Warren Ellis to create an epic, widescreen style full of images and events too big to capture, captured anyway, captured beautifully. “Widescreen” was the word in everyone's hindbrain after that. Things had changed. ‘And then the word went out-- Millar and Hitch are doing an Ultimate Avengers book. But they're not calling it Avengers. They're calling it the Ultimates. When The Ultimates hit, it felt like the distillation of two distinct strands of the new comics storytelling, merged perfectly into one unstoppable creature. For one thing, you've had a taste of the astonishing artwork of Kenneth Rocafort, ably backed up by color artist Dan Brown. Its fair to say that without Kenneth, this book would not be anything close to what it is. I'm leaning heavily onhisability to convey the cosmic--his eye for strange alien beings, interdimensional vistas, the awe and monstrosity of planetary devourers--without sacrificing the charisma and likeability of the regular cast. Dan’s colors bring it all to life- -life-plus, a dazzling polychromatic spectacle that blazes through your eyes and mind like an exploding sun. (And while I'm gushing, I'll take this opportunity to give thanks to letterer supreme Joe Sabino and our editorial team, Wil Moss and Chris Robinson, who keep the whole train rolling. Without the whole team in place, there's no comic.) So by now you've seen what we're aiming for. Something different. Something with an eneray all its own. Something that aims to be as big and special and ready for tomorrow as that first ever Ultimates comic--but moving in a completely different direction. The word of the day is “cosmic.” We're going into the unknown, with a selection of the most powerful heroes of the Marvel Universe to lead the way, and we're going to zap your mind with a billion volts of hyper-energy from beyond the dawn of time.
