Kindergarten TEKS
expected in this
activity:
(6) Geometry and
measurement. The student
applies mathematical process
standards to analyze attributes
of two-dimensional shapes and
three-dimensional solids to
develop generalizations about
their properties. The student is
expected to:
(A) Identify two-dimensional
shapes, including circles,
triangles, rectangles, and squares as special rectangles;
(E) Classify and sort a variety of regular and irregular two- and threedimensional figures regardless of orientation or size
8) Data analysis. The student applies mathematical process standards
to collect and organize data to make it useful for interpreting
information. The student is expected to:
(C) Draw conclusions from real-object and picture graphs.

Classroom activity application:

In kindergarten geometry is a subject that it applied in its simplest
form, shapes. My students would be taught first how to identify their
basic two-dimensional shapes such as circles, triangles, rectangles,
and squares. Once my students had learned how to identify these basic
shapes and there names a activity such the one above would allow
them to combine there knowledge with creativity in order to push their

limits and figure out how to use basic two dimensional shapes to form
other objects such as the one above. This activity allows student the
opportunity to show his or her own creativity as well by allowing them
to color the shapes they see in different colors. I would use this feature
in a different way, I would tell my students to color code each shape
they see for example I would ask my students to color all triangles
pink, squares blue and so forth. Doing this would reinforce there
knowledge and allow them to see each shape again in a different way
this would help them become even more familiar. Another feature that
would be useful from an educator perspective would be the built in
timer. This timer would be a great way for me to have a way of
knowing which students may need additional help. Students who were
able to complete the task in the allowed time would be sufficient and
perhaps allowed to move to building a more difficult shape. Those who
went over the time limit would be the students I would want to focus a
little more attention on for this lesson to insure they didnt fall behind..
This would allow me to evaluate the performance of my students in
relation to the lesson plan. The above activity would be a wonderful
way to reinforce geometry TEKS and in combination with a lesson plan
I believe it would be very beneficial for my students to apply what they
have learned.
